Weekend Update

Sale PSA: A great knotted leather tank from Malene Birger, now $147, fun yellow flip flops from Fitflop (!!), now $23, and white penny loafers from Everlane, now $48 (I’d get these if they had my size!).

1. This week, sharing a great white chore jacket, via Madewell (on sale!).

I love white jackets and have been searching for one that’s clean and yet easy enough to clean (ie, in the washing machine). I like this as it’s a nice loose size, has big pockets, and the buttons are white so it’s a nice uniform look. I just only wish it wasn’t final sale.

2. An interesting article, via the NYT, about the closing of the store Tina. The little interview was fun – I’d be curious to see what she does next.

3. I liked this piece, via the NYT, about Sandy Liang. I’ve followed her over the years but don’t have anything. Loving Baggu, I went to the site after finishing the article, but then discovered it was all sold out! Dear lord. It does look super cute though.

4. I thought this NYT piece about how women’s magazine reading has now shifted to social media and Substacks was really interesting. I’ve thought about a Substack on and off over the years but don’t think I have the bandwidth at the moment to do a regular posting schedule. I’ve followed a few over the years (including those mentioned in the article) but always stop after a while. But yes, these are way more convincing (to me) than an IG post by some mega-influencer.

5. This week, I read Strange Sally Diamond, by Liz Nugent.

I liked this a lot. It’s a thriller, not literary fiction, but to be honest the writing is on par with a lot of “literary” fiction and the story is very exciting and fast paced to boot. It’s a thriller/mystery about a woman who has survived a bunch of terrible things – I’d describe as a mix of a thriller with some “Eleanor Oliphant” mixed in for tone. If you’re looking for one more easy, fun read to round out summer, I highly recommend Strange Sally Diamond.

I read some of the fashion substacks but I have yet to subscribe. I guess my issue is this; with a magazine, you know what you’re getting. It’s reliable in terms of how much you’ll get each month. With the substack subscriptions, how do I know they will post on a regular basis? And how many do I need to subscribe to in order to get the variety of topics and viewpoints that I want? I can get one magazine for $12 per month (less with an annual subscription) but I’d need a lot of substacks at $5 per month to get the same volume. That’s why I haven’t yet pulled the trigger on any substack subscriptions. Not that I’ve read a paper fashion magazine in a long time. But I am planning on buying this issue of Vogue with all of my favorite 90s supermodels!

On another note, I love your Friday posts and always look forward to them!

I also thought that NYT piece on Substacks etc was interesting, although I’m not planning to subscribe to any in particular. Influencing podcasts, like that of one of the subjects, are just kind of exhausting to listen to. I need visuals, not just a fast voice. Glad that you are still blogging – your blog has influenced me towards many a purchase!

Yeah, there are some substacks I am interested in reading but I find the price too high. I try really hard to keep my fixed expenses low. If there was a substack agregator, say 10 for $10 then maybe. Instead, I will be a jerk at some point, do a free week trial, read everything and then bail.

I subscribe to a few substack newletters from writers that I followed there from their blogs, David Leibovitz is one. They are regular posters, but for example, David went on vacation recently and just extended everyone’s sub another month so he could take the month off. Nice move! He has really good reader engagement, which I enjoy. Then, I’ve subscribed to some who never produced anything and so I didn’t renew.
Am I the only one who just checks magazines out from the library now (electronically)? I really like having them all on my iPad.
