Weekend Update

Sale PSA: A great denim skirt from Stella McCartney, now $238, brown easy shorts from Everlane, now $15, and red Prada mule loafers (bookmark and check back if you want!!), now 40% off.

1. This week, sharing this cropped striped shirt, from J.Crew.

I have a weakness for these banker striped shirts and have been searching for the perfect cropped one – this is it! I am irritated because I found this yesterday, and it was eligible for the 30% off code, and now Friday morning I’m about to publish and it’s now excluded. I mean…come on! It’ll go on sale later I’m quite sure, so if you like it too, bookmark and we can wait together!

2. I liked this article, via the NYT, about how much twenty seven New Yorkers willing to divulge on the street make in a year.

3. Sharing this piece, via CNN, about how resale prices are down for luxury brands. Have you seen this? I’ve been out of the market for quite a while so haven’t been following.

4. I always enjoy Pamela Druckerman’s books (like Bringing Up Bebe), and so I thought this piece, via the Atlantic, on why the French don’t want to work until 64, interesting.

5. This week, I read Slow Horses, by Mick Herron.

I liked this a lot! A charming detective novel about a group of older detectives who have been “put out to pasture” if you will, working to solve crimes. I’ll probably read later ones as well. If you’re looking for a good mystery series to follow, I highly recommend Slow Horses.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I wouldn’t call Bottega Veneta a more affordable brand, nor would I put it in the same category as Miu Miu or Telfar! At least not the pieces I have bought! See quote from the article below.

“,,,gravitating to more affordable contemporary brands like Miu Miu, Bottega Veneta and Telfar.”

The Slow Horses books have been made into a mini-series. There have already had 2 seasons and a third is coming- it’s terrific! On Apple TV.

I’m curious to read your thoughts on Bringing Up Bebe. I’ll admit I couldn’t finish it. I enjoyed her hilarious take down of What To Expect at the beginning, but then I felt she had a very individualist American take on what we need to change. She describes high quality accessible preschool, guaranteed paid parental leave, and excellent postpartum care, but then implies that the real secret to lowering my stress is developing my magical French mom “No” voice. I stopped reading when I reached the part about how French women do much more house work than their husbands but still seem to like their husbands more than American women do. Perhaps the book improved after that?

This is a really interesting perspective. TBH I think I first read the book BEFORE kids, which of course is when you feel all confident and smug about how you will be as a *future* parent – I need to re-read it and see how it is on the other side. I laughed at the mom “No” voice – and OMG I forgot that part about the husbands!

I remember those smug days before kids! Ha. Not sure I’ll ever feel smug about anything ever again (except maybe about my American housework-doing husband).

That’s enough to feel smug about!

If you enjoy audiobooks, I highly recommend the Mick Herron Slough House series in audio. The narrator Gerard Doyle is excellent. I am currently listening to the 5th book in series.
