Weekend Update

Sale PSA: Classic black Marni Fussbett sandals, now $376, heeled loafers from Madewell, now 40% off, a delicate alpaca cardigan from Everlane, now $56, and cream mules from Jil Sander, now $423.

1. This week, sharing a recent purchase, these shiny loafers from Tod’s.

I have been searching for the perfect patenty pair for some time! These are basically patent although I think Tod’s classifies them as a shiny leather. They are a little stiffer but I think will wear in nicely.

2. I thought this piece, via the NYT, was interesting: Welcome to the Menopause Gold Rush. I think this is a great development. I know very little about menopause, even though it’s coming faster than I think, and I’d love to know more, for it to be talked about openly.

3. I liked this article, via Vogue, about the Gap holiday striped turtleneck everyone had years ago. I had one too! And I have even fonder memories of the accompanying scarf.

4. Admittedly not the most holiday themed content, but I thought this feature, via Toronto Life, about how a young woman got involved in the white power movement, was interesting.

5. This week I read Getting Lost, by Annie Ernaux.

This was a title I’ve wanted to read a while, because I read an interesting review in The Economist, but I didn’t really think about it, and then she won the Nobel, and so a few months later I saw her book in my local indie (Books Inc!). It’s a memoir which takes place earlier in Ernaux’s life, when she has a passionate affair with a diplomat. It’s not a necessarily romantic however – it’s more like every excruciating, painful detail, so much so that you feel like you are right there suffering with her. I don’t want to sound like I didn’t enjoy it, however – I really did, and it’s for any literature lover especially. If you want to read a somewhat non-traditional memoir that does describe, very accurately (I assume), an affair in real time, I recommend Getting Lost.
