The Shoe Rebalancing – Part Two

Sale PSA: An adorable floral pencil skirt from Tibi, now 55% off (I have a black version and love it), this Le Pliage knit bag in orange, now $95 (this is my favorite colorway and I keep debating whether I need it), and J.Crew has an extra (!) 70% (!!) off a bunch of swim styles, with code SHOPSALE.

Hello! I wrote about my shoe clean out efforts last month. This month, I wanted to give a little update on how everything is going.

I’ve cleaned out fifteen pairs of shoes so far! Some to The Real Real, some to donation, and the ones that were breaking, I threw out. I also learned that you can bring your old sneakers to Nike (they don’t have to be Nike brand) – and the company will recycle them. I didn’t count these in my “rid of” count but I did manage to bring a nice bag of old sneakers (WHY do the kids go through them so fast) to our local store. If you have old sneakers, do look into recycling!

The next section I’ve been tackling is organization. I wussed out and decided not to include any photos of my shoe storage, because even AFTER all my efforts, it is still not great. But before it was a lot worse – my husband and I both have the habit of buying extra pairs of sneakers we like, which we were then stuffing in these huge piles on an upper shelf of a closet…a closet which we also stored other things in, so when we went to go get say, a kite, clunky shoes would also rain down on our heads from above. With my clean out, I managed to clear out some space…I also just got our organization under better control.

Also: I decided to add a *tiny* bit more shoe storage to my closet. I think part of my problem right now is that I store my shoes separately from my clothes…so I can’t really try them on easily and I forget what pairs I have, which I need, which I’m really using. But my clothing closet can’t really fit too many shoes, or I don’t have the energy to make the room, and, well. I decided to try to store some shoes with my clothes however, in a way where I could easily see them, and so I went hunting for solutions. And wow! One development I’d been unfamiliar with, but which I welcome, is “sneakerhead” culture – there are so many shoe storage products now, all so you can take loving care of your shoes! I know I wouldn’t have room for a full rack, and so I bought these but am somewhat nervous as reviews are mixed. There’s a ton of dupes on Amazon however, for a lot less expensive (example here), but I was a little overwhelmed and wanted something a *tad* sturdier as I tend to use my shoes and go in and out of the box and not just stare at the lovingly (well, I do for some of them). SO. I’ll update how it goes.

I also bought these as a fun pair of strappy sandals – I’ll share how they are! I love these sorts of sandals and I’ve had good experiences with Aeyde.

Hi there, long time reader and first time commenter. Just wanted to let you & your readers know that Sports Basement also takes back old sneakers (and used crayons). I’m in the South Bay, so the Campbell Pruneyard store is my local store, but I think the others do also.

Please update us on your closet organization product experiences/reviews – let’s face it none of us need more clothes/shoes but all of us are struggling to organize it all!
