1. Sale season has begun! I’ve been wasting time already on Net-A-Porter and Matches (especially Matches). However of course the first item I decided I really wanted ended up NOT being on sale, this beautiful dress, from Toteme.
I do really like this – the cut, the length (although it’d likely be too long on me), and especially the color. It’s that sort of brighter color that goes really well with black and brown. I have wishlisted it although it is a decent price as is.
2. An interesting piece, via the NYT, about luxury without the logos – I thought the first few paragraphs with Abigail examining the Balenciaga/Gucci shirt were thought provoking. $2,600 to make us think?
3. I liked this piece, via The Cut, about how June Ambrose gets things done.
4. This was a nice article for jewelry lovers, via the NYT – about how tennis bracelets are coming back into style, with new twists. I’ve never purchased a tennis bracelet. This makes me want one. But I’d worry the kids would brea k it.
5. This week, I read Visitation Street, by Ivy Pochoda.
I really enjoyed this. I just thought the writing was so strong and well done. I’m a fan of Pochoda’s – I’ve read a few of her other books as well. There is a mystery, although to be honest I would say that is kind of less “important” to the book – to me the book is really about the characters, and also the neighborhood of Red Hook in Brooklyn. Gorgeous and spooky. If you are looking for a literary mystery, I highly recommend Visitation Street.

June 4, 2022 at 8:01 amTennis bracelets! Always wanted a diamond version, the classic. Does a multi coloured pearl version count? I have a really nice one, rather dramatic colours but classic too.
Regarding labels, we were raised that wearing labels is just advertising for someone else, you are a walking billboard. Other than the classic Izod shirts (or dresses for me as a little kid), we weren’t allowed to walk around with a giant label on our clothes. My father would say “Are they paying you to wear that for them?” Of course this didn’t help me when my early high school years were the Calvin Klein and Gloria Vanderbilt jeans craze and I wanted to “fit in”.
Also we were told the really good clothes don’t have exterior embellishments or labels, those in the know may recognize it, but no one else will. I still feel that way.

June 8, 2022 at 7:03 amNo labels here! I’m more attracted to clothing and accessories that are subtle in their presentation. Maybe a discrete logo on a button. Even the H belt is too much for me. I carry Hermès bags that are mostly unknown and that’s okay with me.
I thought of you when I read the NYT Review of “COUNTERFEIT”, by Kirstin Chen. Is it a book on your radar?
