My Owl!

Sale PSA: Lace up ballet flats from Phillip Lim, now $267, very cute rainboots from Tory Burch, now 50% off, and my favorite air cami from Everlane, now $21 (I just bought a few more of these as I wear mine all the time and use it as an inner layer often – I did try a size down as mine have stretched some, I will update how it is!)

Today is a super short post. I was going to post that I may not be able to post weekly as I used to – to be honest, it’s a topic I’ve been thinking I need to write about for a while because I’m just underwater on a lot of stuff. However, I’m a little afraid that without the set schedule of posting each week, I’ll just end up never posting at all. So I’m still going to try to post every Monday (or maybe every other Monday).

But. I wanted to share one cool thing that has brought me a lot of joy – I have an owl in my backyard! I bought this owl house in late 2020 as a Christmas gift for my son, who loves owls. Me and my husband were pretty lazy to be honest…we took our sweet old time putting it up. But we did last year, and a few months ago, we realized an owl had moved in!

I will say that a year seems pretty long to have waited for an owl to move in….it seems a lot of people have had very quick owl movement after putting up their houses – I read reviews saying an owl moved in within a few days! So I don’t know if it took us longer or if we just hadn’t noticed owls before. But our little owl has brought us a lot of fun and joy. We look for him during the day when he’s sleeping, and at night he hoots, which can actually keep us awake sometimes at night, but it’s okay.

Given everything going on in the world right now it really feels great actually to have some local joy, if that makes sense. If you are looking for a nice addition for both kids (and maybe yourself) I highly recommend getting an owl house! And they can help with rodents too. Win win.

    Dear Katherine,

Selfishly I, along with many of your readers, will be VERY saddened if you post less or not at all, but I understand IT IS A LOT OF WORK to do all this for us and…well, life happens. Thank you for all you have already done for us! 🙂 I hope you are able to continue to post but if not, can you recommend a “safety net” for me/us of some other blogs that you think might soothe us during our FF-withdrawals? 🙁 This would be so sad.

How wonderful you have a new owl to watch over you! Have you and your children named the owl yet? And what a great gift idea for your children!

A few sites you might already be aware of but (just in case) a great resource to keep the children entertained with stories and information about owls.

On this YT channel, this person Amy does a wonderful job of showing you different types of birds including various owls and what they eat (she has a video dissecting the pellet) and introducing you to her little adorable crew.

Also, side note, if you have any pets on the smaller side (and they don’t even need to be very small per se) but please be sure to keep a close eye on them and go out with them when they go out bc owls are known to unfortunately at times view Yorkies, Shih Tzu’s, other dogs and cats as prey…this includes any pet bunnies etc.

BTW sent you a book a while back and not sure if you got it (used the address you had shared with me a while ago) but hopefully you did! It was to benefit Chinatown in the midst of the current uptick in violence against AAPI. I haven’t been on email in quite sometime, so my apologies.

    xx

Kat, this post made my day! Thank you for sharing about your family’s special owl – there is one that has lived in a tree over my house for years, and when I hear it at night, it makes me smile. They bring a lot of good energy.
    Have a great week!
