Sale PSA: A very cute pajama set from Ralph Lauren, now 30% off (get a size up if you want to be comfy – I have these), a great Celine tote in a bottle green, now $855, and a relaxed crew t-shirt from Uniqlo, now $15.
I’ve been trying out something new the last few months – I’ve been buying more clothing items used (or that favorite term, “per-loved”) versus just doing what I would normally do, which is it order items new online. I was doing this mostly to try to be more “green” in my purchasing, but also to see if I could save any money. I’ve bought from sites like Fashionphile and The Real Real of course, but also expanded this time to try places like Poshmark, Mercari, etc. I didn’t do it for activewear, underwear, swimwear, or sleepwear – maybe one day I’ll get there but it’s not like I’m buying lots of activewear anyway. I’ve learned a lot during this process and wanted to share some findings with you:
You might think..but it’s used/gross: I mean, look for stuff in good condition. Look for decent sellers! Think about your own stuff – if you were to sell it, would it be in yucky condition (I hope not! And if so, throw it away!). And either way I wash everything before I use it. I don’t buy anything that looks like it was run over or treated really poorly. On that note..
Look for established/active sellers: This is especially relevant for places like Mercari/Poshmark. Some people seem to upload their items and never return again, which can be frustrating. I bought a sweater which had to get refunded after the seller never responded or shipped after something like 10 days.
It’s too much trouble/easier just to buy stuff new: This is true. I’m not going to say it’s not. Sometimes it’s easier just to dump stuff easily into your cart. I think there’s often a case for buying new, at least for convenience (more on that below). But I think we can stop mindlessly adding another t-shirt, etc in another color. Remember this article on Shein?
I realized for myself that there are certain categories it makes the most sense to try and buy used for – I’ve written some thoughts on this below.
Basics like tank tops, simple easy t-shirts: I found the cost ratio just didn’t make sense for these most of the time. Especially on a site like Poshmark, where there’s an ~ $8 shipping fee. The other issue I found was that t-shirts and tanks, etc are obviously the items that wear out the most easily and/or have stains – thus I’ll probably keep buying these new in shops, with some exceptions, of course.
Mid-level items (J.Crew, Madewell, Everlane): Here is where I made a lot of progress! I was on J.Crew and about to purchase some shorts, but went onto Poshmark instead. Honestly after what I would have paid after coupon codes, etc on the J.Crew site and what I paid on Poshmark, I probably saved something like $5. But it felt great giving these shorts new life! Also, I couldn’t find my size, so went a size up, and it turns out, that is my new size now post pandemic. Haha.
What I would beware of is that obviously on sites like Poshmark, Mercari, there are usually no returns – so maybe start with items you already own maybe, and just want new colors of. That way you’ll know already that they will fit you and that you like them. I’m now on the hunt for one of my favorite Everlane jackets that was discontinued that I’d like another color of.
High end items: I didn’t really do any, in terms of clothes – I’ve been eyeing some shoes but I find shoe sizing quite bizarre lately. Wait well I did get a used Celine bag on Fashionphile! But I’ve been a long time FP fan. I probably wouldn’t buy used high end clothing on sites like Poshmark, etc unless it was exactly what I wanted – the lack of return policy is inconvenient. And I spotted some fakes while I was browsing.
Alright – are any of you experienced Poshmark, eBay, buyers? Any tips for a relative newbie?

May 2, 2022 at 10:45 amI’ve been buying used for years. It’s a great way to find something from last season you missed out on. You can also set filters, like new with tags. Cocktail dresses, labels you like, or vintage is fun to look for. You can find unique things no one else is wearing.

May 2, 2022 at 1:25 pmI’ll buy “preloved” for bags, but nothing else. That said, I have cut way back on buying new; I am trying to minimize the number of t shirts, shorts, workout gear, etc. that I purchase. I’m basically forcing myself to truly wear something out before I replace it, rather than buying multiples. This seems to make my closet happier and more organized. I’m still buying higher-end things, which I need for work, but even there I am being more selective and trying to make sure I am filling an actual hole in my wardrobe every time I make a purchase.

May 2, 2022 at 4:39 pmI have some high end consignment clothes I absolutely love. I’ve also bought maternity wear (Eileen Fisher Renew was great for that) and sweaters. I wear sweaters too hard to justify the price of new cashmere. The prices seem to be going up as more people buy pre-owned but I guess that’s ultimately a good thing for all of us. The lack of a return policy for a lot of things makes it risky, so I mostly buy from brands or even specific items I’ve worn before, just like you mentioned.

May 2, 2022 at 5:35 pmI use my FAshionphile and TRR wish list for both my dream life closet and actual. Sometimes looking at all the stuff for resale actually helps me rethink my desire to buy…. And end up eventually adding my excellent condition but not beloved items to a consignment pile for Pennies on the dollar!

May 2, 2022 at 6:28 pmI am getting so many items pre-loved and I love it! I hate spending too much on clothes because I tire of them, so this is a perfect solution. The savings are great too. Lately I’ve been into the block print dresses from
Alicia Bell but they are expensive for what they are. Been lucky to find some pre-owned at substantial savings.

May 4, 2022 at 10:08 amFirst off congrats for getting into used clothing! It’s so much better for the environment and a great way to experiment on style without breaking the bank! I love the Realreal for secondhand designer clothes since they do have a return policy (return shipping is stupid expensive but you can return it to a store if there’s one near you or use PayPal return shipping refunds). I also like to go to crossroads since they only buyback clothes in good condition, and you can see and try the clothes on in person. I’ve just started shopping at goodwill where I’ll find everlane and Eileen fisher.

May 28, 2022 at 9:06 amI’ve been trying to shop secondhand more. With sites like Poshmark where you can’t return, I stick to brands I know and often am just looking for something I already own in another color. One thing I do now (in addition to checking buyer feedback) is that I leave a question on the listing and see how quickly and thoroughly the seller replies. Learned my lesson after I, like you, bought something that never shipped. Recently bought some things from Eileen Fisher Renew and ThredUp where you can make returns. You have to pay return shipping or a stocking fee, but at least you’re not stuck with something that doesn’t work out.
