Hi! How was your weekend? I’m in Big Sur with my husband as a (very) belated 10th anniversary trip. Big Sur is one of my favorite places on earth and a wildfire started a few hours after we arrived on Friday. It’s awful that even after weeks and weeks of rain our conditions are such that wildfire season can start in January now.
It’s really beautiful here. Although to be honest for some time although we had dithered on whether to come – I had made the reservation closer to our actual anniversary, but it just seemed too stressful with everything going on with Covid and back to school and so we pushed it out. And then a few weeks ago we were like, eh, should still even bother? We’ve kind of gotten so used to the cycle and rhythm of kids and school and work that it seemed almost like too much trouble to break all of that, and pack and have to do laundry off schedule and all of that. But it’s been really worth it to go away for all the usual predictable reasons when one has young children – we get to sleep in and not have to wash up our dishes after meals and there’s long blocks of silence and all of that. I ate so much greasy rich food that I actually had a horrible stomach ache that I had to spend an hour nursing until I could get up and then I went to dinner and did the same thing again. It was worth it!
Anyway, back home, back in real life land, things are still well, the same as they’ve been in the last few years. I don’t know where the 2-5 year old vaccine is and even though Fauci says this and that I don’t even want to read the articles and peg my hopes to a date. I know how that goes! I don’t really have a point to this post, just that it was worth it to take a break from the daily routine, to reset a bit and I hope you all are doing it too. We all need a break.
Wishing you a wonderful week.

January 24, 2022 at 7:51 amBig Sur is also one of my favorite places on earth! I got engaged there, and before kids my husband and I spent countless weekends driving there from the Bay Area to go hiking and soak in its gorgeousness. I’m so happy you got to go. I’m sad about the wildfires there on multiple dimensions.
I’m glad you got to take a break – I could not sympathize more with the – is it even worth breaking the rhythm and doing extra work to try and take a break? It’s nice to hear that it IS worth it. I’m inspired :).

January 24, 2022 at 10:04 amI really feel you on the 2-5 vaccines. Between omicron and the first quarter 2022 vaccine projection for littles being bumped it’s been a dark few months. Hang in there!

January 26, 2022 at 8:08 pmGlad you got a break and got out to Big Sur. I remember you’d once mentioned liking to read negative reviews. I agree that they take special skill to write well. This recent one by Soleil Ho from the Chronicle is the best I’ve read in awhile. Enjoy!

January 27, 2022 at 1:43 pmHappy belated anniversary! We decided not to go anywhere for ours, we splurged on family photos instead, but I hope that when we’re ready, we can do a big international thing. Or maybe just a few days locally. Who even knows what will be possible when we’re ready 🙂
