Most of the articles I find that I like I save for a weekend update. Sometimes I’ll really like an article though, and in those cases I’ll save them for a post. This is one of those articles, via the NYTimes, about a woman who decided to move to Italy with her husband.
Of course a lot of people do this, make a big change in their lives, and a lot of those are in much more daring circumstances. And yet something about this article just stuck with me. The simple message that the woman, Holly Herrmann, suddenly realized one day – why wait to do all your crazy dreams when you might be too old to enjoy them?
The whole article was really lovely. I especially enjoyed the part where they described going to the home improvement store as half day errand filled with adventure – what a wonderful way to spend your retirement and think of life in general. Of course if you were back in your usual home you’d be able to take care of such an errand in maybe half an hour, but then what? How cool to have a sense of amazement and adventure each day. And I like the end, where she gives a few pieces of advice, phrased beautifully – “regret is useless.”
I don’t know if I have anything else in particular to add to this, except that it’s one of those pieces I’ve saved to return to every once in a while. It made me feel more centered after reading it, a little bit more calm, especially in light of all the uncertainty right now out there, and I hope you enjoy it too.
