Weekend Update

Sale PSA: A pretty cotton sundress from Three Graces London, now 60% off, a rounded v-neck tee from Caslon, now $12 (I love this very specific cut of tee), and easy chino shorts from Everlane, now $40.

1. This week, sharing this very nice plaid topcoat, from J.Crew.

Yes, it’s $450. From J.Crew! And it’s the sort of item I’d want to wait for a sale to buy. BUT it looks like really nice material – if I’m reading it right, 100% wool. I like the pattern, the length, the colors. And I’m rooting for J.Crew to succeed! I’ve liked their styling more lately and hope they have more in this direction. Adding this to my list.

2. Are you all watching Real Housewives? I have to be honest, I don’t care about NY anymore but the Beverly Hills franchise is killing it. My God! There’s almost too much material! My favorites are Sutton and Garcelle this season and I really enjoyed this Fashionista interview with Garcelle on her style.

3. An interview from two years ago via Refinery29 with Amy Smilovic from Tibi, that I found very interesting – I’d always wondered about their change in design.

4. A really crazy, twisted story, via Vanity Fair, about a new ballet company which ended in bankruptcy and death (!).

5. This week, I read Beautiful World, Where Are You by Sally Rooney

I’m a Sally Rooney fan. I’ve read all (two before this) her books! She’s so talented and so young and it’s enough to make you crazy with jealousy but I can only admire her skill and enjoy her writing. This is just like her other work (in my opinion) – about young people and friendship and love and all that. The dialogue as always is wonderful. If you liked any of Rooney’s past work, I highly recommend Beautiful World, Where Are You – but if you didn’t, stay away, as it’s pretty much more of the same. But me personally: I could read a lot more of the “same” Rooney. Many, many more books of the same.

Happy Friday, Kat! FYI, BOF covered J.Crew’s fall collection; here’s the link: https://www.businessoffashion.com/articles/retail/inside-jcrews-new-look? I’m so curious to see how successful this new chapter for J. Crew proves!

I also stopped watching (and recording) RHNY…after the first couple of episodes, I decided I don’t care to watch these ridiculous women any longer. The sexual antics and innuendo of Ramona and Sonja are embarrassing to me and should be to them. Awful! RHBH is still being watched…although I can’t stand Erika and don’t believe a word out of her mouth. She threatened Sutton…and yes, it was a threat, not a promise. Don’t know exactly what she thinks she would do to Sutton. I really, really wish she would be booted off the show…but she makes good ratings. I have never liked her even back to the beginning…she has always been a cold b***h!

Oh man…I was an Erika fan before…now not so much. I’m disappointed by Crystal!

If you’re not watching already, give RHSLC a try.

Amy Smilovic is one of my favorite people to follow on Instagram. During the pandemic, she started doing “lives” where she talked about her style and shopping philosophy and showing how to incorporate Tibi pieces into everyday life. She introduces a lot of the Tibi employees to viewers, and explains their decision making and the reason for pieces in each collection. There is also a great article in the NYTimes about how large department stores screwed them over during the pandemic, and she had to really shift her business again in response. I have bought much more Tibi (a lot of it on sale) since watching the lives, and it really does feel good to support a small American company lead by a female designer.

Sally Rooney brings back all the visceral feelings of the days when one was young, of love or despair or recklessness or whatever. The luxury and danger of being young. I don’t necessarily want to read her all the time but when I read her, it gets me and I keep going back.

Love sally Rooney so thx for the recommendation. I saw a couple of your JCrew recommendations lately and not sure if you’re aware, but they charge for returns!! Not sure why I’m so shocked but it really irritated me and don’t think I’ll order anytime soon. I don’t have a store nearby and sometimes order 2 sizes.

I bought the JCrew tweed classic blazer a few weeks ago (admittedly after watching The Chair on Netflix) and it is beautiful and the fit was perfect. I was solidly impressed, despite a number of their pieces being on backorder until January 2022.
