Weekend Update

Sale PSA: A chic sweater blazer from J.Crew, now under $100 with code SHOPSALE (though I laugh whenever I see 10% off), paper bag shorts from Everlane, now $44, and a pretty blouse from Frame, now 60% off.

1. This week, eyeing these Doc Martens which I had as a kid and now wish I had kept:

Man, I love seeing Doc Martens around now. They give me so many good memories and I miss the pairs I had. I just wish they were still made in England – I don’t have any bias about items made in China (and I get annoyed when people think made in China automatically equals cheap), but this is such an English brand. Anyway, this mary jane style was always my favorite. I may get a pair.

2. Did you know Sally Rooney has a new book out this week (I’m reading, and will recommend if I like!). A short NYT piece about Rooney mania.

3. I really enjoyed this great WSJ piece, about how four women are dressing for the office. It’s wonderful to see women in real “office” gear, even if I never want to wear it myself again!

4. I recently went gift hunting for one of the pickiest, fanciest (nicest) people I know, and it was suggested from a mutual friend that I try Porthault, which I’d never heard of and thus immediately had to Google. Anyway, through that I found this short New Yorker piece on the annual sale.

5. This week I read In Order To Live, by Yeonmi Park.

I really liked this. I love books about North Korea in general and tend to read anything I can find; I was slightly worried as the author appeared on Joe Rogan and so, well. BUT the book was very engaging and well done. If you’re looking for a fascinating memoir, I highly recommend In Order To Live.

I’m waiting to read that book. If you haven’t read it, The Girl with Seven Names is the same genre and was very good.

I had those same DM’s in college!! Also had a pair of the 3 eyelet ones in high school and a pair of Arizona Birkenstocks back then. Love that they are classic styles….

Same. Just because it’s made in China doesn’t mean a product sucks. If anyone said that about made in Mexico products… 😐

Did you read about how the American owners of Porthault had a little kerfuffle with their daughter’s wedding planner a few years ago? The parents sued Mindy Weiss after she held the photos hostage when the parents didn’t pay the bills. The parents refused to pay and said she went over budget. Mindy said they told her there was no budget. The wedding cost a few million dollars. Fun stuff!

Dr Martin’s have some styles still Made in England. I bought an oxblood pair MIE a few years ago after a smart hit of nostalgia and love them. So comfy. Kinda wish I just doubled down on the look and went for the boots though? Anyway, not sure of the US site but in Aus, there is an actual section Made in England to filter with. You can always also ask the store because it’s stamped on the sole.
