1. This week, I’m sharing these great acrylic trays, from Target.
I mentioned in my last post that I’ve been doing some home shopping, out of stress – one of my go to de-stress activities is organizing! I love these clear plastic trays, which have made opening my drawers much more pleasing; they also force you to get rid of all those little pieces of junk which would otherwise sit in the corner.
2. I loved this piece, via Glamour, about Ann Sarnoff, the CEO of Warner Brothers. A very interesting and in depth interview.
3. A semi-fluffy piece via the NY Times, about the psychiatrist Samantha Boardman and her new book which is coming out shortly. I only included this because I remember reading about Boardman when I was a kid, in Vogue – she seemed so cool. She was beautiful, was a doctor, and had awesome clothes!
4. I know not everyone has a WSJ subscription, but this article about the succession drama playing out at Scholastic is just too good not to share (especially if you have any interest in publishing!).
5. This week I read Dream Girl, by Laura Lippman.
I love Lippman’s books and she’s one of those thriller novelists which I think should have a way higher profile. I read a decent amount of the “big” female thriller books, quite a few which I never bother recommending here…and then I read someone like Lippman and am always like, WHY is she not a HUGE seller? I have multiple theories it don’t wish to bore you all with my publishing rants. Anyway, Dream Girl is excellent, as her work always is, and If you’re looking for an intelligent thriller, and don’t mind unlikeable characters (I don’t – I love them), I highly recommend Dream Girl.

August 6, 2021 at 11:13 amKat, I have a question based upon idle curiosity: are you buying all the books you recommend to us? If so, do you keep them? Donate them? Share them with friends? I started buying more books in the last two years. Why? Wanting to support writers! Libraries were closed or hard to get to. Also, I love books. But books, like clothes and other possessions, take up space. I am trying to figure out how much of my apartment I want taken over by books. Honestly, I see pictures of walls lined with books on Instagram, and my first thought is “oowie, book p*rn!” I also share some with work colleagues and my mom.

August 6, 2021 at 2:38 pmFirst, I really appreciate you buying books – so thank you!! I have the same desire as you but also the same space problems as you – we have a few little free libraries in my neighborhood which I am constantly stuffing volumes into. I give away a lot. I generally do purchase with certain exceptions – if I’m a little iffy on the plot but curious I might borrow, the same goes for thrillers were I’m curious but I already know the writing might be painful. If I borrow a book but love it I usually try to buy 🙂 But honestly any book consumption is good, whether it is purchasing or library – just THANK YOU for reading!

August 7, 2021 at 8:39 amThe Scholastic inherentance is quite surprising. I can’t believe he wrote his two sons out of the will. Iole has a fabulous VCA collection though…from Fluerette to Perlee. Lucky woman..started at scholastic at 24 and ended up owning it at 54.
Just like Paulina Povizkova and the Zappos CEO partner, his family will have a hard time getting assets based on his written will.

August 9, 2021 at 2:55 pmLove LL for the writing, I’m not even particularly a thriller reader. Got into her bc Anna Quindlen says she reads every word she writes. I want to hear your hot take!!!!
