1. This week, sharing my favorite current lip product:

I have a terrible habit of lip biting. Especially when stressed or busy or whatever, I often find myself doing this – and as a result my lips have been so dry lately, so I decided to treat myself to this lip mask! I actually use it in the mornings as well as in the evenings – it’s a lovely smell and slightly slightly tinted. One warning is that if you are a side sleeper as I am, it can get onto your hair and pillow – I pull my hair back when I sleep so it isn’t an issue, but wanted to call this out.

2. A fun little interview, via Variety, with Kathy Hilton (of recent RHOBH “friend of”) fame. Are you watching Housewives this season? I think Beverly Hills has its mojo back! New York I’m mixed on.

3. I really liked this piece, via the NY Times, about how the old model of the “imperial fashion editor” may be going away.

4. A piece, via Curbed, about the crazy real estate market in Austin right now. I love hearing about other real estate markets! Maybe because it makes me feel better about our crazy local one.

5. This week I read Far From The Tree, by Andrew Solomon.

I really enjoyed this one. It’s a long non-fiction work, with each chapter focusing on a specific set of parents and children with a particular identity: deafness, autism, etc. I learned so much from reading this and it truly expanded my understanding of the world. If you want to learn more about the world, about other parents, children, and simply identity, I highly recommend Far From the Tree.

Far From the Tree may be my favorite book of all time… so happy to see you recommend it here. It doesn’t get enough credit! (But feel free to skip the 2017 documentary of the same name.)

How wonderful that it is your favorite book! I found it almost by accident (I read his other one, NOONDAY DEMON, and got curious). What are some other favorites of yours??

You are such a prolific reader that many of them have already appeared in your weekend updates… but I don’t think “In the Land of Invented Language” (Arika Okrent) and “The Undoing Project” (Michael Lewis) have; both are excellent!

Like Elle, Far From the Tree is also one of my favorite nonfiction books ever, and I also don’t know that I have other recommendations that you haven’t already read! Other nonfiction books I’ve liked recently (though I suspect you’ve already read many of these, or already have them on your list) include I Contain Multitudes by Ed Yong; Hidden Valley Road by Robert Kolker; and Empire of Pain by Patrick Radden Keefe. (I also really enjoyed Nomadland, which I think you’ve definitely already read.)
