Blog Talk Vol. 7

Sale PSA: A great casual v-neck sweater from L’Agence, now 40% off, the perfect loose linen shirt from J.Crew, now 40% off, an adorable cabbage tureen from Matches, now 50% off, and ah…adhesive bra stickers which I do find quite useful in summer, currently price matched at $20.

My book: is coming out in a few weeks (!!), and so I’ve been writing a few short pieces that you will see closer to publication. Here is a photo I took, for one, of my current writing space – at the moment I’m working out of the kitchen in the mornings as I can only write before the kids wake. I thought I’d also share it with all of you; finding time to write has been hard for me lately and I know many of you with artistic sides may also be struggling. Be easy on yourself – we have all had quite a year!

Shopping: I’ve been meaning to share some new purchases. Though to be honest I’ve had mostly stinkers, including two (sob) pair of Hermes sandals which didn’t fit right and thus had to be sent back (yay for the wallet). Mostly my successful purchases have all been little organizational knick knacks for the house.

I did also want to update that I tried these Birkenstocks again and after a little bit more wearing they actually hurt – I was surprised as I love my other Madrids but it has to do something with the big buckle on these. Birkenstock friends, beware that the buckle on these may press on your foot if you wear them a lot! At least that was my experience.

Travel: I recently realized that my passport is actually expired. It apparently did so late last year, which made sense as I did not look at passport basically all of 2020 (and could barely find it in the house). So I finally got it together to get a new hideous photo doneand mailed in my application. And it’s been weeks and weeks and it hasn’t even been registered as received. Apparently passport applications are going SUPER slow right now (I was told up to 18 weeks from the time you mail) so anyone planning international travel: please take note! You should start right the process right away.

PS: I’m not planning on going anywhere international right now…but given the new REAL ID requirements I figured it’d be good to have an alternate ID on hand.

Beauty: I recently painted my nails for the first time in a year. I was a little afraid that all my polishes might have dried up but they were still there and after some shakes were good to go. My kids were fascinated by the fact that my nails were painted a different color. They have seen me pay ah…very little attention to my appearance for the last year. And I’m not good enough at makeup application that it makes much of a difference.

And finally: I was going to do an update on Covid/school but there isn’t much to say. Instead I will add a small complaint that my allergies are driving me CRAZY this year! I am taking medicine, air filtering (thank you wildfires), vacuuming constantly, and had shots for years. And still I am going crazy. Anyone else suffering? What has worked for you? One final tip: I’ve started keeping these children’s chewables in my bag, to take during an emergency (they work faster than the adult version).

Hi Kathy! I just want to let you and your readers know that for a few years now it has been advisable to get your passport renewed a year before the expiration date. It can take months to renew and some countries will not let you in if your passport is too close to expiration, as it can become a security issue. Please check everyone in the family’s passports!

I really can’t wait for your book. Thanks for the update on the passport. 18 weeks now?!? Initially it was supposed to be an 8 week delay. I forgot I sent mine off because it had expired and I figured I could beat the rush once the world opened back up for traveling. That didn’t work. Lol! And as for you allergies…join the club. I just came off of one of the worst upper respiratory infections I have had in years. Feeling better but that one was a doozy. Hang in there. I read this article that confirmed my suspensions. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/allergy-season-2021-symptoms-worse_l_60903fade4b0ccb91c34d253?ck_subscriber_id=253767412

Hi, my allergies have been really bad too. But I found something that works. It’s a nasal spray called Dymista. Someone I know who was getting allergy shots, taking an oral antihistamine, using anti allergy eye drops and nasal spray told me that they didn’t any of these anymore after trying Dymista. I then got it on prescription and it works amazing. Not sure if the name is different in the U.S. but this is a game changer.

I agree! Dymista and Xyzal is the only combination that successfully manages my allergy symptoms (also after trying a thousand medications, allergy shots, the whole shebang).

Very excited for your new book! And manicures! I got one the other week and my kiddo was fascinated.

A bit of a request—if you’re open to sharing, would love to hear about your career transition from a “normal” job to a more creative career. How much did kids fit into this pivot? I’m at a similar point in my life and would value your insights.

I had seasonal allergy as well and I found having a air purifier helps. I am using older model of this: https://sharp.ca/en/product/business-plasmacluster-air-purifier-fpk50uw
I guess if any of these has HEPA filter it should do the job.

Bit late but better than never. Also got wheezy allergies during lockdown. Could it be we are doing our own cleaning and kicking up dust and fumes?
A short string expresso cuts out
The wheeze almost immediately. Caffeine maybe?

Hast to be the concentrated caffeine.
