Hello there! I hope you are doing as well (as can be). Oh man, the beginning of this blog sounds like almost every email I write these days, at least if I haven’t spoken with the person in a while…okay, moving on now:

On reading: This week, Larry McMurtry and Beverly Clearly passed. Both of these authors were so meaningful to me – Lonesome Dove remains one of my favorite books ever, a true masterpiece, and I read and re-read the Ramona series endlessly as a kid. Ramona and her Mother is one of the few books I kept with me, move after move, into adulthood – you can HOW much I read it, and I’m slowly reading it to my son now. One wonderful thing about having children is re-living all the books that you loved, and finding all the gems that the author left in for the adults to appreciate. And on that topic:

Kids: Both of mine are still learning at home. I hope my daughter’s preschool will open up her class in maybe May or June? I’m crossing fingers for this. As for my son, he remains on a “waitlist” to go to Kindergarten in person. It’s incredible how quickly our thinking has changed…just a few months ago, we wanted to stay out, now we are on a list to get in! But given that it is almost April, I am pretty much resigned to the idea of him never stepping foot into a Kindergarten classroom. A kind of bittersweet feeling, but I hope that this coming fall will be closer to “normal.” It’s a little terrifying because you think of all the things that could go wrong, the variants, flu season. But…

..overall, I feel more positive here! I feel that relief is coming soon, in classrooms opening…basically just in time for us to deal with summer camps, which we have not figured out.

On shopping: Out of optimism that I one day might feel like wearing them again, I have ordered some linen midi dresses from Etsy. I also bought another pair of Vuori joggers, but in honor of spring, a pair of shorts as well, in the same material and cut. Here’s a question I am curious about: as you’ve gotten older, do you guys change the kinds of shorts you wear? Do you buy shorts with longer inseams? Do you still wear shorts? I can’t imagine giving up shorts but for some reason this year I feel a little worried about sporting them. Maybe it’s just the Covid pounds.

Some mini wishlist items: this cropped cardigan from Everlane (in the green color too, which I think is perfect, if slightly trendy), and at a much higher price point, these plum blossom earrings from Van Cleef.

Dining: We are going to try outdoor dining soon. Soon I hope! We still haven’t done it yet. Cooking remains a drag. That’s all my comment on this front for this week.

Watching: I am currently binge watching (2 episodes a night, while I puzzle) the show Community. It is SO good. Arrested Development lovers, please give this one a chance. At least two episodes. I still have not been able to get into Schitts Creek. I don’t think I ever will.

And finally: mental state. Overall, I’ve been feeling good! I hope you are too. BUT if you aren’t, I want to share that I’ve had plenty of dark days, and periods of depression. I was having a great time with my kids the other day on the playground, and then randomly a bug flew into my mouth. I think that’s a pretty good summary of how 2021 has gone so far…and anyone feeling the same, I’m right there with you. XOXO.

How are YOU doing?

I certainly changed the shorts I wear. In college, I wouldn’t mind showing a bit of cheek (o god), but now I prefer shorts that stop at the thinnest part of my thigh and a tad loose to make my legs look slimmer. I used to be all about those tight booty hugging versions. No more! High waisted even better!

Thank you for posting your Ramona book – I had the same exact one (and a bunch others from a box set). Her adventures are still in my head! Appreciate the mental trip back to a simpler time 🙂

Hope you can try outdoor dining soon. It’s one of the things that has sustained me through this.

+1. Although I only read the Ramona and Her Father book to my kids. I think that book won an award.

I hate seeing that video, the terrible feeling it brings. Something has to be changed.

I still wear the shorts I have from college(!), but these vuori ones look cute! I do try to wear longer shorts when I’m around other moms (especially after one mentioned the inappropriateness of booty shorts), but I have a very straight up and down body. Midriffs I can no longer pull off after having 2 children.

I’ve never read the Ramona series, is it too late as an adult? Someone mentioned Dear Mr. Henshaw as a good book for kids.

Strangely I’m having more anxiety as we’re getting vaccinated and things are reopening. Perhaps because we’re not good at assessing risk.
