Hi – first off thank you so much for your wonderful messages and comments about my novel. I feel so fortunate and I really hope that for those who do read it, that you enjoy it….that it offers some entertainment given that it seems like in June we might still (breathes into paper bag) be in some sort of lock down (for us Americans at least). Thank you thank you thank you!
Okay now onto the weekend:
1. This week, sharing one of my favorite office supply purchases: this set of pens from Le Pen.
I love these pens. I had one when I was a little kid – it came from one of my parents – and I remember thinking about how cool this pen was and how smoothly it wrote. And now look, I’m an adult and can have as many as I want! I use these when I’m editing (blue for notes, red to cross out) and for writing in my notebook and all sorts of things. A little pick me up for my days.
2. I’m sure some of you heard about the death of Harry Brant. I thought about whether to share this because I’m not sure what it made it particularly “newsworthy.” But I remember seeing little reports on him over the years…it’s a tragedy.
3. Joan Didion has a new book of (her early) essays out and so that means she has to submit to interviews. I enjoyed this very succinct Q&A , via Time.
4. First start with this painful, powerful piece from GQ. And then read the followup, about what happens when critics dislike the film that’s about your life.
5. This week I read Mating, by Norman Rush.
This was an interesting (and sometimes difficult) read. Written in the first person, a love story set in Botswana. I would describe this as both difficult at times to get through (some sloooww action) yet when you actually got there, it just hit you like “wow.” I guess what I’m trying to say is this book actually made me feel something…and isn’t that why we all read? If you’re in the mood for a gorgeously written classic, I highly recommend Mating.

January 29, 2021 at 9:35 amThe talk of pens makes me curious about your writing process. Do you write on paper or on computers? What time of the day do you write? Do you plan it all out before you start or do you just go with it? Would love to know!

January 29, 2021 at 11:42 amI read both articles by and about Matthew Teague. I may have to watch the film. The first person GQ article was devastating…I can’t imagine going through the horror he and his wife went through. Their friend was truly an angel on earth.

January 31, 2021 at 5:31 pmYes (and my apologies as this sounds so pretentious and I really don’t mean for it to be) I can’t say anything about the details at this time!

February 4, 2021 at 9:46 pmExcited for you! I remember going to a Liane Moriarty reading when she mentioned “Big Little Lies” got optioned, but couldn’t say more.
It seems that there’s more appetite for Asian American stories so I hope more get out there. If “Imposter Syndrome” is optioned, please don’t let them change the character’s ethnicity!
Also, will you be doing any zoom author tour stops?
