Weekend Update

Sale PSA: A fun green sweater from Isabel Marant, now 60% off, AGL loafers, now 66% off, a mixed material wrap dress from Tory Burch, now 40% off, and a great oversize plaid blazer from Madewell, now $51 with code GIGANTIC.

1. Sharing this very cute sweater, from Everlane.

Everlane, $110

Ugh! I know I’m a broken record but truly Everlane has had very good sweaters this season! I feel that their basic cashmere styles can be found at Uniqlo, etc but they excel at these cool knits with good materials. This is an alpaca/merino/cotton blend and I love the design and the floatiness of it. If you are considering I would suggest maybe buying as the gray sold out as I tried to order it.

2. This may be old news to some of you, but to others who have not encountered it, this Elle piece on the reporter who fell in love with Martin Shkreli is too bizarre not to share.

3. A piece via the NY Times, about how every celebrity now has a makeup line. Do you ever buy from “celebrity” lines? I did randomly buy a Joan Rivers (!!) product to try to cover up some grays. I am happy to give Joan Rivers my money.

4. A long but worthwhile deep dive by Vulture, into the American Dirt controversy.

5. Sharing an additional article I was happy to see come out yesterday afternoon, about Simon and Schuster canceling Josh Hawley’s book contract. I will be upfront that in the past I have viewed the job of book publishers as being to (largely, with exceptions) allow and promote different viewpoints and free speech – just because I don’t agree with something doesn’t mean I think it shouldn’t be published at all. But I think what happened this week was horrific and treasonous, and instigators like Hawley should bear the consequences.

6. This week I read The Snakehead, by Patrick Radden Keefe.

I came across this book randomly, after I bought a copy of Say Nothing (which is also excellent) for a friend. I was surprised to discover Keefe had written a book about smugglers and the underworld…in Chinatown! I was so excited to read this and in many ways I found it even more engaging than Say Nothing. If you’re looking for a good non-fiction rad, I highly recommend The Snakehead.

I re-read Family Trust over the weekend and happy to report that I enjoyed it even more this time around – the humor of it and the quiet strengths of the female characters! I’m reading Minor Feelings and find it to be cathartic. As a fresh off the boat female asian immigrant, though highly educated, we bear the burden of racial/gender discrimination without the basic awareness to name it, let alone fending it off – and in the process internalizing the unfair treatment to be our flaws. The book is a true reckoning. Really appreciate the recommendation.

The Snakehead is such a great book. I enjoyed it so much and was amazed that smugglers were coming to New York from the Oceans and sailing around South America. I remember when the boat was found on Rockaway Beach (I think). It shocked a lot of people.

I am laughing as I type this, as your prior commenters were high-brow on discussing books….meanwhile, I am answering your question about celebrity make-up. So, I have purchased some heavily instagram-inspired/advertised make-up by Trinny Woodall from that old BBC show, What Not to Wear. I suppose she’s a minor celeb, but I have to say, I love her eye and lip make-up stackable pods. Good stuff!
