It has been a stressful first week of 2021. A ridiculous, enraging week. As a distraction I decided to do a post I’ve been thinking about for awhile but had been putting off as it’s a lot of work – but we all need some distraction, right? Especially me! To that: a wardrobe recap post of the movie Unfaithful.
Have you seen this movie? If not, I am sorry but I will have to spoil some for you – it is about Diane Lane, who is married to Richard Gere, being….unfaithful. With the very handsome Olivier Martinez. I remember watching this movie when it first came out and being somewhat confused about all the marital dynamics going on but thinking Diane Lane was so beautiful and elegant. I was musing about her wardrobe the other day and finally decided to go back and watch and I loved all her clothes so much that I decided to do this post. As you’re reading…remember that this movie is from 2002! Almost twenty years ago!
Okay, here goes:
We start with the lovely Diane Lane at home.
She wears a sexy men’s shirt! Of course!
I like this outfit because it is a) attainable and b) something we’d all actually be wearing even in lockdown. Here is a version I own. It is great but does wrinkle easily….just like Diane’s.
Next we see her doing her usual errands…in this great loose gray sweater. You will see her in this sweater a LOT. Gray sweaters will be a recurring theme.
She runs her errands…gets blown over by the wind…meets Olivier Martinez. He invites her into his shop.
Another shot of her full outfit. Again, this is her ERRANDS RUNNING OUTFIT. Gorgeous dress, elegant trench, and wonderful high heels. I found a great version of her loose trench here, from Everlane.
I also tried to find her exact make of pumps here but could not. Please do not ever Google “Unfaithful heeled shoes” as it leads you to some unsavory content. So why not something like these forever favorite Blahnik mules? They are gorgeous and maybe a little more modern looking though her pumps above are classic.
Hanging out at home after her day out. More realistic outfit except she is wearing tight jeans to lounge on the bed. But then again I am not Diane Lane.
I like the J.Crew vintage cotton crewneck as a version of her t-shirt above.
Visiting Olivier again! In an oversized trench…it almost looks like a man’s. I would not try this unless I was Diane but I would consider getting a size up in a classic Burberry.
And underneath we see another loose gray sweater!
I know it isn’t exact but i like this option from Equipment.
Okay. Going back for a visit to the handsome bookseller. (Rare book seller? I wasn’t really paying attention). Back in the same trench and a pencil skirt and cardigan.
Some more views of this little pointelle cardigan because I think it is great!
Some similar options are from Madewell, Reformation, or my favorite option which is this cotton merino cardigan from Everlane which I do actually own and highly recommend!
I hope I am not spoiling anything but this is where the first…unfaithfuling occurs, haha. I thought I’d include that detail because that sweater is actually a little more sexy with the unbutton potential, etc. Okay anyway.
Back at home after doing the deed. Another loose gray sweater. You can’t see but she is wearing it with loose sweatpants here. Finally speaking my Covid-19 athleisure language.
Some carefree husband time. In a classic white blouse and denim (we see the shirt again later).
Cafe meeting with Olivier. It’s a basic tight black sweater – I just included a little back view here because there’s a nice shot of the watch with leather strap. I don’t think we ever get a close look but I think Diane Lane wears Cartier. Right?
Ah! Going off to meet Olivier again in a trench and dress.
Some more views of the trench, her pearl earrings, and the dress. Gorgeous shape on her.
Back with the boyfriend. Uh oh. Snapped by the private eye! I couldn’t get a good shot of this full outfit but under the suit she is wearing a black dress, very D&G style (the modern day equivalent in my opinion would be Altuzarra.
Our friend, gray sweater again. An affair! So emotionally turbulent!
Shopping at the market in her trench and a simple black cardigan outfit. This is such a “mom” outfit but also looks chic? Why don’t I wear trenches to the market? I WILL. One day. When I go to the market.
Interesting green shirt here. The first time we see her in a brighter color. But it’s a preppy “Kelly” green. And goes great with her complexion (of course). Boden has multiple green cardigan options.
At home now…back in that white blouse, now with loose khaki pants.
I love this layering look a lot. I love love the shirt + sweater look. And of course with another gray cashmere cardigan.
Another gray sweater, another henley (?) underneath that, right after.
A pretty floral white blouse that looks like it might be the cream version of her navy dress above.
Yes, I’m including a picture of Diane in a bathrobe. She’s just like me (if this was all she wore in the movie). Now you can feel like Diane in your Barefoot Dreams robe (I also saw this the other day and thought it was quite nice and realized it is a Kardashian brand. Ahh!)
One more hangout at home – another gray sweater.
There are so many options for affordable loose gray sweaters but a favorite of mine is this boyfriend version from J.Crew. Another one I would recommend is the Everlane Alpaca crew.
Gorgeous gray silk dress for what I think is a wedding?
And the final shot in the movie – she’s back in that trench.
Ahh! Okay, that was a lot of photos. I hope you enjoyed! Here are my wardrobe takeaways for Unfaithful:
1. Know what works for you: there are so many gray sweaters! Trench coats! And all in pretty neutral color schemes! But Diane Lane in this movie is a woman confident in her dressing and who knows what she likes.
2. Don’t be afraid to get multiple versions if you really like it: Kind of an off shoot of point #1 above. How many gray sweaters did we see?
3. Classic really is forever. The movie is nearly two decades old but still looks fresh today.
4. But you have to look comfortable. Something I really appreciated – but for a few scenes, all of Diane’s outfits were pretty relatable. They were quite realistic.
5. And because I’m Chinese and can’t leave it at four points…a good haircut helps loads for looking put together. Because Diane’s hair is PERFECT in this movie. Not too young girlish but still so beautiful. Unfortunately I myself have not had a professional haircut in nearly a year and will not be able to benefit from this insight right now. But maybe later in the year (fingers crossed).
If you’ve made it this far, thanks for reading! I’d love to hear your thoughts on the movie.

January 11, 2021 at 10:33 amSuch a good movie…upsetting but good. I love Diane Lane…and her sweaters! I have a great gray cashmere from Everlane last year…now I would love to find an oversized gray bouclé knit. The search is on!

January 11, 2021 at 11:06 amI want that wardrobe….then and now. May I add to look as good as Diane Lane when “oh so casual” too? I have a fondness for grey sweaters…
Now Kathy a crazy question – were you able to take screenshots of the film? Or did you search the internet to get the pictures? (When Apple changed their iOS system a few years ago, I can no longer take screenshots of movies on iTunes via my iPad. I miss that.)

January 11, 2021 at 12:32 pmI remember that movie. I didn’t remember the specific clothing she wore, but I do remember that she looked casually elegant. However, I may be biased because I think she always looks great.

January 11, 2021 at 5:31 pmI love the Wardrobe Recaps! I have visited some of your older ones a few times during the quarantine, dreaming about fashion while wearing sweats and going nowhere but my couch and TJ’s, because the fashion is so timeless in the films you review, as is your commentary! I felt like I was with you the whole way with this one…thinking ‘her hair is amazing!’ and then got to your own point about it LOL
Thanks for this unexpected surprise this Monday! 🙂

January 12, 2021 at 4:57 amI never comment on blogs, but I am emerging from my cave to say that this is my favorite series you do! I love going back and looking at all the ones you’ve done in the past too.
My suggestion for the next one is Angelina Jolie’s character in The Tourist (that movie with Johnny Depp). I love how her character mixed very classic pieces with a heavy dose of retro glam.

January 13, 2021 at 6:52 amLove this series! A wardrobe recap of an Asian female character in the future perhaps?

January 13, 2021 at 4:53 pmOoh yes I’d love that, do you have any suggestions? The mini series always have such good ones but I feel that the wardrobes are pretty well covered there (way better than I ever could) through various blogs

January 13, 2021 at 11:04 amThe film By the Sea, starring Brangelina, has some great clothing but the film was hideous (imo, of course!).

January 13, 2021 at 2:45 pmCan I just say I love how attainable this wardrobe feels? In a world where actresses have stylists plan their coffee run outfits, this is so refreshingly realistic!

February 16, 2021 at 9:00 pmMay I echo another commentor like on “The Accidental Tourist” fashion? And the movie is interesting, as well. Also…maybe a long shot, but an older movie from the later ’90’s I think, “The Rich Man’s Wife”, with Halle Berry, had some good classic and neutral pieces. Thanks for doing these wardrobe recaps!

February 19, 2021 at 5:13 pmDo you mean The Tourist with Angelina Jolie? I will add both to my list!

September 12, 2024 at 5:14 pmI’m so glad I’m not the only one who loves her style in this movie . Since we have decided she is wearing a Cartier Tank Americaine watch, it makes sense her wedding band is the Cartier Vendome (picture in gray sweater affairs are emotionally turbulent photo)… I mean Diane is a Cartier girl, right ? Does that appear to be the correct ring ? I love it…
