Happy Monday! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. For those of you in California – did the winds keep you all awake? I’m mainlining caffeine this morning.
Today, a post of pure self promotion: please allow me to share my new novel, Impostor Syndrome, out this June from Custom House/HarperCollins.
I first started this novel in March of 2019, after randomly having the thought pop in my head while I was driving (to Santa Cruz of all places, so I was really trying to pay attention while navigating Highway 17 as I’m not the greatest driver): what if one of the most powerful female executives in the world was in fact, a spy?
At the time, I was about ~100K words into another novel, one which I had started after abandoning ANOTHER book in progress, also around the 100K mark. I was determined to finish that book (because seriously it is so damn painful to keep writing and writing and then throw it all away). But for some reason this idea and more specifically, the characters, just wouldn’t let go of me and so finally I gave in, and set down my at that point current novel in progress, and started again at zero. My literary agent was going on maternity leave that July, and so I knew I had only a little less than four months to get something for her feedback. I wrote crazily and sent it to her and found I was still obsessed, still had something, and so kept going and going until I had something to send my editor. And now almost two years later here we are.
I am very proud of this book and hope that you read it. And if you do read it, that you enjoy it! I’m proud of my first novel, Family Trust, but I will say when I wrote that I knew really nothing about plot, nothing about publishing in general and was going from pure instinct and love of writing. I had no expectation that it might one day be published. Since that point, I have learned so much about writing and language and character. I did most of the edits with no childcare during the pandemic – not trying to toot my own horn (okay maybe a little bit but really more like catalogue my suffering). But I was seriously obsessed and had to finish this book.
It’s funny having a blog…in “real” life I’m actually quite private, and the reason I don’t have too many outfit photos is even though I enjoy them on others is I die of embarrassment every time I have to take one myself. It’s the same with telling you all about this book – a part of me is very much like, okay, okay, enough about yourself. But this book has been my baby for the last two years. I have worked and just made myself overall crazy over it. So if you could please allow me one request: if it is within your means to do so, I would so, so appreciate a pre-order! They are important to the publisher and thus important to little ol’ me.
Some places you can pre-order:
Amazon (they’ll adjust the price you actually pay before it launches, usually around $20 or so), Bookshop (currently 10% off), and Barnes and Noble (those of us who spent afternoons in high school there…we owe them our allegiance).
Also, I know it isn’t within everyone’s means right now to do discretionary spending. And also that I just not be everyone’s cup of tea. But I hope I am some of yours. A lot of random events brought me to become a novelist…but I don’t think I ever would have done so if I didn’t have a blog. If I hadn’t already been writing in some way over the last decade. Thank you so much for reading here these months, years, and for being with me on this journey. And allowing me to share my book 🙂

January 25, 2021 at 8:47 amJust pre-ordered! Can’t wait! I’m so excited!! Best Monday ever. Just from the little you gave away on the plot, I know the protagonist is going to be kick-ass! The title, though, gives a totally different vibe. Love the tension there.

January 25, 2021 at 9:44 amCongratulations – it sounds like a brilliant read! I would love to pre-order but in our house the adults are banned from buying physical books. With limited space (family living in a tiny home in the centre of London during lockdown – argh!) our limited book space is devoted to reference or kids books now, or a few treasured copies of special books from our lives. Is there a way to preorder on Kindle (in the UK)? I would love to show my support somehow as I really enjoyed your first book and blog as you’re writing about all the things that I enjoy (books, luxury, interesting money/fashion/crime articles – are you me?)
Looking forward to reading more of your work, both here and books, in the future!

January 25, 2021 at 8:23 pmYou are so kind to try, I don’t think it can be ordered yet in the UK unless you have a US account. Thank you so much for reading 🙂

January 25, 2021 at 6:55 pmWow Congratulations!!!!! I’m SO incredibly proud of you!!!! That is hands down amazing that you managed to achieve this in the midst of a global pandemic, with your children home and no help. What the what?! SUPERWOMAN.
I must admit I don’t normally enjoy fiction. I make exceptions for things like JK Rowling books, but generally I love reading non-fiction. But I love your blog so much and love supporting you! I preordered and hope my little +1 makes a difference! 🙂
Kat
January 25, 2021 at 8:30 pmThank you so much, it does make a difference, and of course now I must ask what non-fiction you have been enjoying!
