How are temperatures where you are? It feels cold where we are! Even though it isn’t *that* cold. We had rain this weekend (oh boo hoo, I know some of you are thinking) and since we’re basically trapped inside all day I started to think about all the ways I try to get cozy for winter. Having been raised in a cooler (ok, cold) Asian house, I am just used to not using much heating in the winter (and too much dries out my skin), but I still like to be comfortable. So below are some of my favorite products and ways of using them to do so!
First is the item I use the most, and which is very practical: this bottle from Zojirushi.
I drink hot tea green constantly all year, but especially in the winter months. I really like my tea at a precise temperature – not scalding, but not lukewarm either. In the winter, it cools down too quickly in the air and so I rely on this thermos. It barely loses heat at all (in fact, if you put in super hot water, it will stay super hot for a very long time, so just FYI).
What I do is make my tea in my normal porcelain mug. Then I will add some cold water just to immediately get it to the temperature I want. And in the mug it goes! I take it with me everywhere, and especially on cold hikes/outings (I just drop it in my husband’s backpack). But I also use it all the time in the house. The only pain is that you have to be careful to wash each component – I take it apart every few washings. It is also available at Target at identical pricing.
Super thick fleece. This may have been obvious to most of you, but this is something I’ve only recently discovered, despite my extensive hoodie collection: there is regular fleece, and then nice super thick fleece. And super thick fleece is soooo much warmer and cozier. I realized this when I was freezing in my adidas hoodie only to realize I was nice and cozy in my Patagonia, seen above. A less expensive version is also Uniqlo’s. I do love Patagonia though for multiple reasons, including their mission and quality, and have been trying to shop there more!
Comfortable, high quality slippers. I wear slippers all year round and don’t always use thick socks, so in the winter, good slipper are key! My FAVORITE are these LL Bean Wicked Good Slippers. I have multiple winter slippers just because I can’t be without them (so upstairs, downstairs, at my mom’s, etc), and go through about one pair a year. Though to be honest, I could wear these LL Beans for longer. They are super good quality and the shearling lining is so warm and the rubber sole is almost like a shoe. I’m a size 6.5 and sized down to a 6 – after a few wears the shearling gets pressed some and the soft suede also stretches to be a perfect fit.
Polartec leggings. I used to have fleece leggings but somemies found them too thick – then I discovered that there are these thick ones, like this Polartec version from Athleta. To be honest in California I have to be careful about wearing these – they can easily feel OK in the early morning, but then by the afternoon quickly feel too hot. I feel anything at 50F and above and these aren’t necessary.
For some less expensive versions: these from Amazon have great reviews, and though I do not wear them out, these AE waffle joggers are super duper cozy and soft.
Rechargeable hand warmer. I take super early morning walks and I use these when it is freezing and my hands are cold. I love that it is rechargeable and this is just a handy little item for picnics outside, waiting for the kids on outside playground playdates (when we had those), etc. Very useful!
PS: I also have a few of these disposable ones that I keep in the car just for emergencies – if you have kids and are in a cold area maybe consider having some too!
What are some of the ways you keep warm and cozy in the winter?

December 14, 2020 at 10:15 amThat Zojirushi thermos is everything!! I have one for coffee and a separate one for tea, just so my tea doesn’t have a lingering coffee scent from the rubber parts (which I do take apart and wash every time, not too a big of a deal to me). It keeps hot drinks hot and iced drinks with the ice cubes intact after a full working day in my home office setup. And they don’t leak!!
I never thought about adding some cold water to my hot tea!! My process was to pour the tea into a porcelain mug and *wait* until it cooled a bit to pour the tea into my thermos. Needless to say, this resulted in my returning to the kitchen after several hours to find my cold tea long forgotten. LOL!

December 14, 2020 at 3:31 pmAhhh that is a GOOD IDEA! I also often “Wait” and have the same result! And then chug the cold tea so I can start over…sigh

This is my eight winter with these slippers: https://www.footwearbyfootskins.com/leather-footwear-details.aspx?pi=32
It’s about time for a new pair.

December 14, 2020 at 4:27 pmI feel you – I know objectively it’s not *that* cold, but it feels freezing here! I wear full-on ugg boots at home, and if I’m not wearing a coat, I bundle up in this luxuriously sized scarf: https://shopthecurated.net/collections/accessories-1/products/the-light-grey-cashmere-scarf
It’s going to be a long winter!

December 14, 2020 at 8:18 pmWhat a timely post, I also gave up a mug and drink out of my Hydro Flask all day. How did I ever let my tea get cool after half an hour!
For shoes, I got a pair of shearling Birkenstock Arizonas. They look ridiculous on me because I had to size up but they are so comfortable. I can’t bear to wear them out for now and use them around the house.
Aren’t polartec leggings so awesome? Don’t laugh, but in NY winters I would layer footless rights under my jeans or pants. With the polartec leggings I can skip the layering, such a relief. I once made the mistake of wearing said leggings on the plane…was boiling hot for most of the flight. Ooops!

December 14, 2020 at 11:12 pmthe rechargeable hand warmer is brilliant! my fingers are always freezing and now that everything is stainless steel/insulated I don’t get to warm my fingers on my hot drinks. As for hot drinks, i have found the perfect ratio of cold water to add to my hot tea so it’s not scalding – I put it directly into my thermos so no need to wash an extra cup (laziness at it’s best!)

December 15, 2020 at 11:29 amI used what I think is the same Zojirushi for years. I remember being blown away by how long drinks stayed warm when I first used it and I even bought multiples so I could always have one. I switched a couple of years ago to the fatter S’well bottle – what they call the travel mug. https://www.amazon.com/Swell-Stainless-Steel-Travel-Jasper/dp/B076GNN6RN. I use this fatter S’well exclusively for hot drinks and, like the Zojirushi, it keeps the drink hot for hours and hours. The benefits (for me) over the Zojirushi
1) I got tired of dealing with the little components for the Zojirushi. The S’well only has the one lid. For me, I’m not using it while driving so It’s not a big deal that i have to use two hands to open and close (one for the base, one for the lid).
2) the big opening makes it easier to clean with a bottle brush.
3) the inside of the S’well is stainless steel. Maybe they have stainless steel linings available for some of the Zojirushi, but the Zojirushi bottles I had all had a coated lining. Even with regular cleaning, it got stained and I never felt it was clean. (Gives one pause to think that is what tea and coffee does to your insides.) I throw some Polident and water into the stainless steel S’well every now and then and let it sit – and the inside of the bottle looks great.

December 16, 2020 at 4:13 pmI loved Zojirushi, but switched to a Yeti for hot drinks,, because the inside is stainless steel also and the lid is simple. Drinks stay hot for a long time. I use a large hydro flask to drink cold water. It just seems to work. I have the exact Patagonia as you pictured. I love it so much…except it has no pockets. Ugg makes an extremely cosy hoodie I saw and bought on impulse at Nordstrom. It’s fantastic– pockets and hood but a little lighter than the Patagonia. Patagonia is one of my favorite brands, though.

December 20, 2020 at 11:15 pmI have the same Zojirushi bottle! Same colour too! In fact, I have 2 – one for my daughter’s school water bottle and one for myself. Talking about Patagonia , this is my daughter’s first down jacket and she wear that since 2 years old, (i bought size 4), till she’s 7!! (My girl is on the slim side, when she’s 7 the jacket is short but still able to put on). It’s a great brand and hold up to so much abuse of the young kid – amazing!

December 27, 2020 at 11:40 amAnother no-heater Asian household in SF Bay here. I discovered Montbell Down booties this year and my feet are finally nice and warm https://www.montbell.us/products/disp.php?p_id=1118504 Even thick wool socks and fleece house slippers didn’t do the trick on the coldest days. These have cuffs and are over stuffed.
I wear them when I sit at my desk for long stretches because the nylon bottom doesn’t have a hard sole. There are traction strips. I got mine in blue because it reminds me of smurf feet and makes me smile.
