Recent Purchases: August 2020

Sale PSA: Adorable print shorts from Ulla Johnson, now 60% off, the classic chore jacket from Everlane, now under $50, a simple cotton tiered dress from Madewell, now under $50 with code WHATADEAL (I really like this!!), and a short sleeve shirtdress from Theory, now 60% off.

Today, sharing some recent purchases! Actually most of these are from the last days of July but I decided August would be less confusing. Okay, moving forward!

Reformation Carsen dress: I just bought this a few days ago! Because it is my favorite Reformation print (and my favorite Ref fabric, linen) and the price was decent for the brand (under $150), and yes I did buy one for my daughter as well. Super cute, right? It kind of reminds me of a “nap dress” and I hope it’ll be as comfortable.

PS: I just noticed the fruit print is now sold out! I think it’ll likely be back soon.

Sunday Afternoons Cruiser Hat: Okay this is not a beautiful item. And it is even more un-beautiful on me than on the models. HOWEVER I really like it. I actually impulsively bought this hat while staring at my kids run outside – I usually wear baseball caps but the sun still freckles my neck in those. My kids each have multiple of the kid versions of the Sunday Afternoon hats (I have tried various Amazon knockoffs – but none are as good). Anyway I was staring at them, envying their light hats, and then decided to try and see if they had one for adults too. And yes, they did! This hat is SO light and it literally feels like I am wearing nothing on my head. And provides a good amount of shade! No regrets.

PS: Here is a more attractive version, from Anthropologie, but I’m sure it is at least slightly heavier!

Birdfeeder: This is purely to amuse the kids (and likely myself). It was recommended by a friend (hi L if you are reading) and I’ve been getting photos of all the great birds their’s is attracting! The price is right and right now I’m just trying to figure out all the situation. What kinds are good for birds? What will make them angry? How do I deal with raccoons??

Galison Puzzle: This one is very pretty, no? I’ve done a shameful amount of puzzles (aka a LOT) so far. I’m looking forward to starting this next!

What have been your recent purchases?

I’m curious to find out what seeds birds love the best. We have a nectar fedeer and it attracts a lot of hummingbirds in our area.

The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is coming up! With several Nordstrom closing stores and quietly doing layoffs, it is time for me to contribute and keep the store alive. I love their free shipping policy and hassle free returns. I would be sad to see them go down if the economy doesn’t recover.

Do you have early access to their anniversary sale? Will you post what you plan on buying?

I will update!! I do have early access but hadn’t looked yet. I was kind of back and forth on doing a post (don’t want to inundate people with content on the sale). But if I find some items I really like, I will post! Is there anything you are eyeing?

Curious if you read this article about Everlane’s mission allegedly being a sham – https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/26/fashion/everlane-employees-ethical-clothing.html
(I’m not giving you trouble about buying from them by the way, just wondering if you saw and what your thoughts might be! I was surprised to see it!)

I didn’t see this one but I have seen a LOT of pieces. To be honest I don’t really see Everlane as an “ethical” brand – they are the same as any “regular” brand sold at Nordstrom, or Uniqlo, etc. If they can revamp their practices etc then I would be happy for them – but I don’t see them that way. I feel that purchases made there should be made with the same thought as buying from the Gap, etc – versus some smaller brands where I’d be more inclined to buy purely to support their mission, you know?

Ah, thanks for sharing. That’s completely fair! I guess I was more taken aback because I thought that was a key differentiator for them but you’re right that regular brands are no different and I would buy them all the same šŸ™‚

Back in the 1950ā€™s, I remember my mother and I havIng matching dresses. I must have four or five. (1954-5). She got them for us to wear to some mother & daughter event, but I donā€™t remember what it was. Then my sister came along and we had a number of matching outfits. It was common back in those days to dress sisters like that…but kids clothes werenā€™t nearly as cute as they are today.

Oh man, in my experience, birdseed feeders are all racoon magnets! Even the ones that are supposed to be ‘racoon proof’ have ended up torn from their branch and once on the ground, forced open by any means necessary (racoons are WAYYY smart, as I’m gathering you know :)). Generic birdseed might not be what you want…as they could be seeds of plants considered invasive for your area? How to know what birds in your area like? I would google for Cooperative Extension in your county, they’ll be part of the UC system, and ask your local expert about local birds, native seed feed and maybe they have anti-racoon tips too? Might take a couple of emails/phone calls to get to the Extension Agent in your area that has bird expertise – if you find the Master Gardener, that’s a good place to start, they should be able to connect you to the right expert.
I hope this helps, it’s an offering in gratitude for your excellent linen recs on Etsy šŸ™‚

I think another important thing to point out is that the bird seed is also a rat/mouse magnet, you just won’t see them coming in the night. Bird feeders feed and attract all wildlife, not just birds.

Hi Kat, I ended up buying the Rachel Comey ardent jumpsuit in midnight (size 2) but it doesn’t work for me. Don’t know why I still bother with jumpsuits but here we are. Let me know if you want it. I’d only be looking for the sale price ($187) +shipping from Singapore. I won’t be back stateside for another year…

Thanks so much for thinking of me!! I am OK for now as I’m not clear on sizing – I’m sorry it didn’t work out for you!

For your raccoon problem… Add chili peppers/flakes. Birds arenā€™t bothered by the spicyness. I feed my African gray parrot jalapeƱos as a treat. Totally safe.
