1. This week, sharing this corduroy jacket, from Uniqlo.
There’s just something very comforting about this jacket. Even though it is July and I would not wear it for several months there’s something appealing about its softness and oversizedness and excellent price. And I love corduroy. I have a feeling it will be a favorite fabric come this fall when we are all still on lockdown. Sigh.
2. I hadn’t heard much about this – sharing this article, via ProPublica, about the bizarre fall of the CEO of Kate Spade/Coach’s parent company.
3. A gossipy grifter piece, about the art world (I always love art world scandal stories!) via Vulture, about the mini Madoff of fine art.
4. Would love to hear your thoughts about this NYT piece, about how au pairs are finding themselves in a more powerful position.
5. The most beautiful and heart wrenching writing I’ve read in a long time – this opinion piece, written by John Lewis, right before he passed. Read it and read it and then read it again.
6. This week I read The Girl With The Louding Voice, by Abi Dare.
I really enjoyed this. This novel is what I might describe as a Nigerian coming of age – it was also one of those “can’t put down” kind of novels where I stayed up way past my bedtime because I had to finish. It starts one way where you think it’s going to go in a certain direction…and then ends up another way, almost rom-com ish (but in the best possible way). If you’re looking for a well written, truly enjoyable read, I highly recommend The Girl With The Louding Voice.

July 31, 2020 at 12:26 pmHost mom here. Our last ap returned home early, and our new match can’t get into the country from NZ. I have been told no by 2 girls, had 6 not even want an interview With me and I’m hearing families are offering $1,000s of $ in bonuses and other perks That frankly we can’t compete with. I have 3 kids aged 2.5,4.5, and almost 6 and live in Ohio so perhaps not the “sexiest” location. My husband is an essential worker, I work for a family business that has been devastated by Covid. Families with more $ and resources are just pricing out other families- especially military. most articles Paint host families very poorly, like we are exploiting these girls- what is wrong with wanting affordable, flexible childcare? (And having a spare room to allow this arrangement?) Perhaps some families are treating their au pairs poorly and they shouldn’t be allowed to host. Also, there are some girls who probably shouldn’t be au pairs. Ugh, whole situation just makes me sad. We love hosting, love our previous au pairs and are so excited for our new match. I’m trying to be hopeful that she can get into the country in early January as we currently do not qualify for any of the J1 exemptions.
