Weekend Update

Sale PSA: A light cotton sweater from Uniqlo, now under $30, a slipdress from Reformation, now 30% off, a simple linen dress from Rails, now under $100, and for anyone looking for lazy linen shorts for summer, these are my favorite and on super sale.

1. This week, sharing some pajams I am very into: these from Desmond and Dempsey.

I really like cat prints! They are probably my favorite. I like them so much that I am often jealous of my daughter as she can wear so many fun Hello Kitty items whereas I’m left looking for leopard print coats and debating items like this clutch (verdict, likely not). But these pajamas are such a gorgeous print! And a beautiful light cotton. I would honestly even wear the shirt outside. Now I’m just waiting for my size to come back in stock (and on that note what’s with the late Net-A-Porter sale this year? Anyone know?).

PS: for anyone looking for friendlier pricing, Desmond also has a collaboration with H&M with some very cute items.

2. A very thoughtful piece, via WWD, about Fashion’s Great French Revolution. Worth a read! I admire Miuccia Prada very much. I hope she writes a book one day.

3. Sharing this piece about the struggle currently being faced by many Italian artisans, in the wake of Covid-19, from the New York Times.

4. An old, very good, and long article, via GQ: The Making of Dylann Roof.

5. Normally don’t share pieces like this but for some reason all the little details of this situation are enraging – about the vlogger Myka Stauffer “rehoming” her adopted son.

6. This week I read Destiny of the Republic, by Candice Millard.

I’m mainly a fiction reader. I guess at the end of a long night, I want to escape somewhere. Somewhere fake and with magic. However, for some reason one exception is “Presidential biography” non fiction, ala Robert Caro (though I still have to be in the mood). To that end, I was happy to discover Destiny of the Republic, which covers James Garfield, who (like most Presidents) was way more interesting than I thought! The book has sat on my shelf for a few months, and I finally felt rested enough to pick it up. It took a while (I read a few other novels while going through it) but I finally finished. If you’re looking for a excellently written, engaging non-fiction read as a good distraction for all that’s going on current day, I highly recommend Destiny of the Republic.

Hey Kathy, FYI the link for “vlogger Myka Stauffer “rehoming” her adopted son” doesn’t seem to link to an article.

Great article on the Italian artisan community and how that will change retail relationships with consumers. Love this quote: “Perhaps this crisis will create a new consciousness, a focus on moderation and better quality.” I think we have been moving towards this gradually, and hope we can incentivize more producers to operate in this way.

Raising an autistic child is not easy. I am sure the Stauffer’s decision was difficult. Perhaps Myka thought they were adopting a child like Angelina Jolie’s Maddox to balance out their family. She did says she was unaware that their adopted child was autistic during the adoption process.

I think the only way they can right this “wrong” is to give all the Youtube content ad profits to a trust under Huxley’s name. This is something a good mother would do if they really cared for the child’s well-being. She doesn’t deserve to be paid for those videos and kudos to those who unsubscribed to her channel and unfollowed her in social media.

I have these pyjamas and can confirm they are fabulous as they look! I bought them for a girls weekend away and it meant I could slouch around in them all morning and not feel bad about looking a mess. Wore them home during Christmas and my mum also loved them; this is rare!

Regarding the vlogger, all I can say is that, considering her behavior, I think the little boy must be in a better situation than he was when he was with her. Yes, I’m judging her and I make no apologies for it.

Ooo, I gotta check out the book you read this week. I’m the opposite of you where I enjoy reading non-fiction. 🙂 I read Candice Milliard’s book, River of Doubt, and enjoyed it. If you haven’t already, I would recommend that book esp if you are a fan of TR or Candice Milliard.

Hmm, I like reading memoirs, Non-fiction essays, scientific articles, medical mysteries, history/politics…

I highly recommend if you haven’t read it already: The Family That Couldn’t Sleep by DT Max. I literally could not put the book down. Warning: it will scare you!

        A couple of non-fiction reads I enjoyed:

        Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan

The Mute’s Soliloquy by Pramoedya Ananta Toer (translated)

        Underground by Haruki Murakami

The Six Wives of Henry VIII by Alison Weir

Terror in the Name of God by Jessica Stern

The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat by Oliver Sacks

The Best American Essays of the Century edited by Joyce Carol Oates – I think this is seriously the “best” compilation of essays of American writers of the 20th century.

The Art of the Personal Essay edited by Philip Lopate – good, well-rounded selection of writings

The Color of Water by James McBride

        Walking Ghosts by Steven Dudley

The Man Who Ate Everything by Jeffrey Steingarten

Bloodsong! by Jim Hooper – this one was an interesting read/perspective. I awoke early one morning and was watching the history channel when I came upon the topic of mercenaries. This book was read immediately after that.

Hope this helps you delve more into non-fiction!
