Weekend Update

Sale PSA: A great Uniqlo/hang out at home potato sack dress, now just $15, the Natori Bliss underwire bra, now 40% off, a super flattering swimsuit from Tory Burch (the white colorblock does wonders), now 25% off, and for those luxury bargain hunting, a classic black Hermes Victoria, now $1655.

1. This week in fantasy clothes land: sharing this Nanushka dress (which is 40% off at least)!

I love this dress, even if it seems kind of a strange fall/spring hybrid with the leather tie. Maybe that’s why I like it! I appreciate the little details – the bit of fringe, and the tie that is attached (I am always losing loose ties in my closet). And the slit! If this goes on further discount I think I’ll be trying it, what do you think?

2. Sharing this piece, part of many articles on this topic lately, via the NY Times – When Mom’s Zoom Meeting Is The One Which Has To Wait.

3. For those who need a bit of a fashion/beauty oasis – check out this piece, via FT, on Christine Nagel (head perfumer at Hermes) and her favorite objects. I love her taste. I love her.

4. A short piece via The Cut, about what J.Crew’s bankruptcy (so sad, so private equity) means for Madewell.

5. This week I read Wild, by Cheryl Strayed.

So I’ve actually owned this book for years, tried it, put it down for some reason, and a week ago was like…why don’t I try it again. And had no idea why I couldn’t finish it the first time! Because I flew through it. Wow. This book was so much more than I expected…not that I know what I expected, but it was just more. And the writing is truly great. And funny. And introspective. In my opinion, this one deserves all its success and more. If you like travel writing, if you like memoir, if you like just plain good writing – I highly recommend Wild. (Have you read it? I’d love to know your thoughts).

I liked “Wild” but had to turn a page or two when she talked about her horse – hope you have a great weekend and thanks so much for keeping this up. Your blogs bring a bit of sunshine into these gloomy (figuratively and literally – we are still waiting for spring on the east coast) days!

I think I know exactly what scene you are talking about. It was haunting. Thank you so much Jaime, you too!

I enjoyed the NYT article and I think I have a unique perspective as an in-house corporate counsel and divorced mother in a 50-50 custody arrangement, and quite frankly I have never felt so fortunate to have this arrangement as I do now. It has forced a full and equitable split of the home-schooling and parenting functions while allowing for a fair split in the time devoted to our work obligations. If I were being callous, which I certainly don’t want to be during a global pandemic, I would offer the perspective that the men in these relationships should be thanking their lucky stars their wives haven’t divorced them – because they’d either be paying a lot of child support money or taking on a much greater burden of the child care responsibilities right now. Happy Mothers’ Day!

First – your comment was so great I read it multiple times. I’ve heard this from multiple divorced friends (as well as a pair of happy lesbians). There are a bunch of articles like this that have come out – I’ll keep linking, and I’d love to keep hearing your thoughts on the topic!

      This is fascinating. Makes sense!

Another exception are some of the NYC doctor moms I know who work intensive inpatient jobs now caring for patients with COVID. Their husbands have had to step up. Sometimes it sounds like utter miserable chaos–I mean, tiny NYC apartments with no outdoor space, no school or extracurriculars, attempts?!? at homeschooling, and then the daily stress of an exposed spouse. But, lo and behold, the husbands step up.

“Wild” is such a wonderful book, so full of wonder and sadness and wisdom. I also loved “Tiny Beautiful Things” — one of the most moving books I have ever read. Was fortunate enough to interview Cheryl Strayed last year and she was just lovely and so present.
