Sale PSA: Linen jogger pants from Caslon, now up to 50% off, a simple jumpsuit from Everlane, now 50% off, awesome boots from The Row, now 40% off, a super pretty dress from Ulla Johnson, now 40% off. Also, for anyone who needs masks, Madewell now makes some cute ones (share your sources, too!).
1. I hesitated on sharing these Birkenstocks because I’ve sung their praises so often – but I love the pair below SO much and they are so useful during this period that I’m sharing again.
If you are at home and looking for a summer pair of slippers and/or shoes you can easily slip on and off, walk a decent amount in, go play with the kids, wash off, etc- seriously, consider these. They are great for all of the above. I usually use regular Gizehs in the summer but since I’m now in the garden so much, my shoes get dirty super quick and these are way easier just to hose off with water (or even machine wash!). They are super durable and in black, look decent enough to go out to casual places in. I can’t recommend them enough and the price is great. My version of Birken-Crocs, ha.
PS: I was originally going to share this merino polo, which is back in stock in many beautiful colors! I love this one and its great for tucking into jeans/pants.
2. Interesting piece, about how Canada Goose will no longer be making garments with (new) far starting in 2022. My view on fur has changed a lot in the past years. I likely wouldn’t buy any more pieces with it (maybe with the exception of something like CG is doing, but maybe not).
3. Oh gosh, this may be my favorite article of the week. Especially if you are one of those who read and loved Save Me The Plums, you MUST read this piece, about how Anna Wintour and the rest of Conde Nast are managing the Covid-19 fallout. By the way, the writer of this piece, Ben Smith, is the founding EIC of Buzzfeed and thus very connected in the media space, partially what makes this piece so great.
4. And finally, this piece, via The Cut, about the experiences of nannies working for wealthy families during Covid. This article is gossipy and the people are also horrid.
5. Finally, thank you all for your comments on this post. Some great comments about luxury and how your purchasing has changed over Covid-19. I actually had someone from a well known luxury brand e-mail me, saying they sent the post to their team! Thank you again for all your thoughtfulness.
6. This week, I read the book Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982, by Cho Nam-Joo.
I liked this a lot. A lot! I’ve been looking forward to it for ages. A huge phenom in South Korea, Kim Jiyoung follows the path of an “ordinary” girl in S. Korea as she goes to university, tries to find a job, gets married, has a kid, becomes a housewife. And all the soul crushing sexism, and societal expectation, and discrimination she experiences along the way. This book is unapologetically a social commentary on the status quo in S. Korea – it isn’t so heavy on plot (that said, I flew through it). I only wished I could read Korean so I could understand the original! As I’m sure there are nuances lost. If any of this sounds interesting to you, I highly recommend Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982.

May 1, 2020 at 6:57 amTarget has a great dupe for the Croco-Birk. I just got them and I don’t notice a difference between the birk version I have. I might get a second pair… so I would have three pairs of croco-birks as well as my regular birks. Send help.

May 1, 2020 at 6:59 pmI watched the movie and cried. A lot of similarities growing up in China. The single child policy made things better for a lot of girls though but still wait until time to get married and have kids…

May 1, 2020 at 10:38 pmAdding in that Reformation and Johnny Was are also selling reusable clothe masks for 5/$25. Reformation has a separate option where you can buy a set of 5 as a donation to the frontline whereas Johnny Was donates a set of 5 with each set of 5 a customer buys. Some other considerations: 1) Reformation are tie straps, which is actually really nice for folks with larger heads (like my husband), while Johnny Was are elastic ear loops 2) Johnny Was has a pocket for a filter whereas Reformation ones do not 3) both make masks from clothe they already have but, with Reformation, that means you might get a pack with fun Reformation prints orrrrrr plain black or white ones (practical but not as fun), where as Johnny Was has example prints displayed online and they’re all so lovely!! 4) Reformation was pretty early to get on making masks so their supply chain was able to adjust logistics earlier and can ship out within 3-7 business days whereas Johnny Was needs 2 to 4 weeks lead time. I places my Johnny order on 4/11 and just got an email saying they think it’ll be another week before they can ship. I honesty think we’ll be wearing masks for a loooong while and in the future so I’m okay with the wait.

May 11, 2020 at 3:49 pmI also am waiting on Johnny masks… I got some from Sanctuary bc the prints are cute, but there’s no filter pocket. (Which is ok, I plan to use them to cover the n-94 I’ve been reusing.)
If I had to be in close, closed quarters with strangers, I’d probably get on the order list for http://www.cambridgemask.com
I also think we’ll be masking for a while, and so to have a little mask wardrobe and a few protective hats/ visors will just ease my mind a bit.
