Items I Wish I Bought Earlier

Sale PSA: Plaid wide legged pants from Vince, now 40% off, platform Vans, now under $40, and a chic utility shirtdress from Everlane, now $62, and pretty slingbacks from Nicholas Kirkwood, now 25% off.

Also, just one more reminder that Nordstrom is doing their $125 gift card with a $500 purchase through the 19th – I rarely repeat sale PSAs but this is a great one because it has no designer restrictions, which means its a good time to buy items like the Gucci Princetown loafer (I just got my second pair, ugh)

Do you ever have items you knew were “theoretically” good buys, but which you put off buying for whatever reason? I have a bunch like that. Mostly because I get lazy or feel bad about spending even more $$ or don’t want to clutter my house, or whatever (but that doesn’t seem to stop me from getting all kinds of other unnecessary items). But which once you get them, you just feel silly for having waited so long? This post is inspired by socks (yes socks!) because I while knew that there were different quality levels of socks I never cared, until I finally bought a great pair and now I can never go back. So – some of the items I wish I had purchased earlier, below:

Good socks. As I said above. I’ve been wearing lots more ankle boots lately. I don’t know why, I’m just kind of in a phase. But, for boots I need socks, and so I recently purchased this Falke pair. I have had good tights (Wolford, Falke) for some time but never bought nice socks. They’ve always just been plain cotton ones from Gap and Uniqlo. And actually, Uniqlo has some of my favorite “affordable” socks, but then I tried these Falkes and was in love! The warmth! The softness!

They stay up and the ribbing is comfortable and keep my toes warm and honestly, I could wear them all day. They’re a great merino/cashmere/cotton blend and just perfect, the bottom has extra cushioning and my feet feel great when I put them on. I’m definitely buying more!

Also, Bloomingdales has a great selection and they are having their $25 off of every $100 spent sale.

A good clothing steamer. Wow! I switched to steaming versus ironing a few years ago – it’s so much easier than ironing and also better for your clothes. I have a little travel one (still highly recommended) that I was using at home, but the cord is too short so I was always stuck in a little corner of my room, which would quickly get steamed up. So I recently upgraded to this J-2000. And it’s perfect! I can do lots of garments and am no long trapped by a short cord. Steaming is such a calming activity for me. If you’re spending time ironing – please, please try a steamer! And it’s really great for outerwear I’ve found, like trenches (but I’m always super careful with wool/cashmere coats, and go very slowly, and never against the “grain”).

A weighted blanket. I bought my first earlier this year. And oh gosh. It’s like being snuggled! Snuggled and NOT too hot, which was my main concern earlier with weighted blankets. I guess I just thought they’d be these huge heavy heated beasts. Bu actually mine is kind of a padded cotton, which is just perfection, and I should have gotten one earlier. I mean, we sleep every night, right? I could have been having good sleep every night! One thing I will mention is that I found it more useful in the summer than winter – winter I already like to sleep under a pile of blankets, versus in the summer, I use a thin blanket, which doesn’t feel as “snuggly”. If you have problems with waking in the night, I would definitely try a weighted blanket. The one I linked (which is what I have) is cotton and soft – the only issue is with washing (I always use a sheet underneath and air it out in the sun every month or so).

What are some items you wish you had purchased earlier?

I completely agree with not wanting to buy items because of clutter. I recently bought a Dyson, something I’ve been putting off for years, and can’t believe I waited. The suction! The design! As a runner, I love balega socks even for just walking around the house because the cushioning is perfect and they hold up for years and years.

Interested in the weighted blanket! How do you clean it?

So I haven’t cleaned it yet (judge away!!). What I do is sleep always with a sheet underneath it (which I obviously do clean) and then once a month or so on a sunny day I hang out outside – the sun refreshes it. Or at least I hope!!

I have the Jiffy J-2000 steamer too. My husband got it for me. It’s what I’ve seen used in retail stores and and it seemed too much at the touch but I love it! A couple of cautions that may seem obvious (but weren’t to me): 1) that sucker really pumps out the heat and the steam – please be careful as it is really easy to burn yourself (or for kids to get burned) – even the hose gets hot; 2) maybe you are less scatter brained than I am, but I’ve learned never to leave it while it is heating up – it’s too easy to for me leave it, get side-tracked on something else and then returned to a laundry room with moisture on the walls; 3) always unplug when not in use – the on off switch is great for turning on and off with your foot, but it’s also easy for it to get bumped accidentally, turning; and 4) I use distilled water – I’ve had it for years and it seems to have kept scaling away.

    Hello,
I think I have that exact same blanket for about 2-3 years, use mine daily. I tried gentle wash in washing machin once, of course, air dried, resulted no issue. Ever wonder how to take it on trips with you?
I wear smartwool socks in winter, they are not the softest but durable and warm.
    Have a nice day 🙂

Two of my favorite things in the world, Kat – the Jiffy steamer and Falke socks! good one! For winter I also like Darn Tough socks, which are thick and warm – found them by searching Reddit of all places as apparently Army and Marines servicewomen love them, and they would know!

Any recommendations for a garment rack? Now that I’ve ordered this steamer I think I need to order one!

Or… whatever you hang your clothes on while you are steaming!

Gosh I feel like I have a list a mile long of things I wished I’d bought sooner – generally fashion accessories that seemed uber trendy so I hesitated, but then became modern classics (rockstud shoes, golden goose sneakers, moncler, etc.) When I ended up buying them years later I wished I’d gotten more use out of them and bought when they were cheaper! Oh well, you never know. I keep telling my friends if I ever try to buy those ugly Balenciaga sneakers to stop me!
But apart from fashion, I feel like now what I really splurge on are towels, sheets, underwear, pajamas – the little things that make a huge difference in comfort and happiness!
