Weekend Update

1. Today I am highlighting a good sale item. There are so many out there right now! You just have to look. But I understand why you aren’t. Do you have sale fatigue? Me too. But there’s so much good stuff. Like this classic double face black Joseph coat, now 60% off.

I mean, this is almost the price of a J.Crew coat (okay, maybe only full price, which we know J.Crew never is). But still! It’s such a classic item, a forever one, and I’ve never been disappointed with Joseph. And it’s 60% off and in black!

Also, SSENSE has a bunch more deals – check out their Simon Miller bags (classic Bonsais for under $200!), and a longer version of the coat in forest green (want this so bad).

2. Starting off strong by first recommending this article, via the Sydney Morning Herald, about what it’s like for a male escort. Why not?

3. A fun piece, via Artsy, about the creative process of master jewelers

4. I want to hear your thoughts on this interview with Karl Lagerfeld, via The Cut. Why has Karl survived saying all kinds of controversial stuff when others have bit the dust (or have they)? If I’m being honest, I personally like Karl even when he is being heinous, I don’t know what that says.

5. This week I finished On Beauty, by Zadie Smith.

This was my third or fourth Zadie Smith. I love her. This book was no exception. It’s a family story, following the various members of a mixed race family living in Boston, set heavily within an academic setting – it’s Zadie Smith, so no car chases or murders but rather super sharp writing and lovely imagery.  If you liked her past work, if you appreciate complex family stories, if you like stories set in academia – I highly recommend On Beauty.

When I started to read the article about the male escort, I assumed that he was what used to be called “A Walker”. These were young men who escorted older women to charity and social events, primarily in large cities. From what I understood, they were basically arm candy for wealthy women. So, this article was a bit of a surprise. I clearly began it with a bias in my thinking. I simply never thought about a man providing this service, while I knew it was provided by some women. It’s reading articles that challenge my embedded assumptions that make me realize how much of my thinking is based on past norms vs what’s common in today’s world.

This is nothing new…men have been “providing this service” to both women and men for hundreds of years.

Of course. I took one look at the photo of the author and jumped to an obviously inaccurate conclusion.

So interesting and the sort of male you describe is frequently in Dominick Dunne’s books!

I totally enjoyed the KL interview, haha! I had also been pondering how some people got busted by controversies while others seemed to thrive on them. I’ve been reading Antifragile by Nassim Nicholas Taleb and it really shed some light on it! Karl, for people who know him, has been like this forever! He’s had a reputation for it. He’s antifragile in front of such controversies. Anyway, if you are interested in the book, it’s quite long. It sometimes gives me laughs but sometimes headaches.

Just finished Beartown and loved it! A friend suggested – it took me a while to get into what I thought was a book about hockey, but it’s really about so much more – mostly how communities raise/treat different children.
