This long weekend, I went on a dupe frenzy. Do you ever look up dupes? And by dupes, I mean a cheaper version of an existing, more expensive cosmetic/skincare item. For me, it all started when I ran out of my Tatcha oil below, and had to get some in a hurry but was not brave enough to go to the mall. So instead I looked for something I could get from Target, and then realized that there were many “dupes” of expensive items I love, and who doesn’t like to save money? Especially since I tend to be quite liberal with my skincare products…I like slathering creams and oil all over my face, it just feels more relaxing and and soothing. And then I entered a dupe Googling spiral, where I started looking up more dupes, and then found out there are dupes of basically everything, which makes sense in the cosmetics space, and so went hunting for more. Here are my favorites:
Tatcha Camellia Cleansing Oil ($48) Yes as mentioned above. I love this stuff! I’ve gone through multiple bottles. I use quite a bit though (I guess I like that feeling of rubbing the oil in all over my face) and since my current bottle is low, I thought I would try an alternate. I debated and finally landed on –
Burt’s Bees Cleansing Oil ($11-$15) I like this a lot. It has argan and coconut oils, both oils that I use on my face so I felt comfortable. There’s a ton of product and it’s very gentle and took off my makeup (but I don’t use much, so it’s not a huge concern for me). And my skin doesn’t feel tight afterwards. In fact, it’s a very similar feeling to how I felt with Tatcha. I’m attached to the Tatcha for some reason, so I’ll probably return to it at some point, but I really, really like this as an alternative.
Trish McEvoy Lash Curling Mascara ($32). My favorite mascara and a super high recommendation from a friend whose beauty recs I really trust. I tried it and love it – it really does curl your lashes, and gives a very natural (but still extra) look. And it’s a breeze to clean off, with warm water. That being said – I’ve found this dries out quite easily. And it ‘s expensive! So I decided to try –
Boots No7 Stay Perfect Mascara ($10): The brush for this is slightly different – actually a bit less clumpy, as it is smaller. So far, similar effect as the Trish, no clumping, however it is *slightly* more difficult to get off (I just need a few more rounds of water). I haven’t used long enough to determine whether it dries out quickly, but so far I’m quite happy! Note that I went to two Targets to find this – I think it sells out pretty quickly and is popular.
YSL Touche Eclat ($38): This is like the Tatcha cleanser in that I’ve bought this product so many times. I’m actually okay with the price as the packaging is gorgeous and feels sturdy and it lasts quite long. I use 1.5. But I finally decided to try a new one in the name of dupes, so –
Maybelline Instant Age Rewind ($7-$10): I’d seen this Maybelline many times and it always caught my eye because it looks like a giant eraser and fun to use. I didn’t originally equate it with Touche Eclat – maybe the anti-aging claim was confusing! But I’m at the age where I’m okay with some rewinding, so. I have the color “Light”. And it’s really nice! Also my baby is obsessed with it, she thinks it is a giant Q-Tip and is furious I don’t let her have it.
Okay so I just realized I mixed up the products in the two photos above and put the two expensive tubes together and the two inexpensive ones together instead of batching the mascaras and the concealers. Sorry!
Anyway…I’d love to hear…what are your favorite dupes? So I can add them to my shopping list!

“Also my baby is obsessed with it, she thinks it is a giant Q-Tip and is furious I don’t let her have it.”
Try Paula’s Choice Cleansing Oil
For mascara my face is the cheapie brand Essence – Princess False Effect Lash Mascara… $7 here in Canada

November 27, 2018 at 9:50 amGreat article! I only use Trish McEvoy’s lash curling mascara and you are right – it does not last. $32 is too much for something that lasts a couple of weeks. I’m headed to Target as soon as possible for the Boot’s brand.

November 27, 2018 at 12:10 pmI LOVE skincare products, and often expensive ones, but can’t bring myself to pay $$$ for products I wash off (makeup remover, cleansers, etc.) anymore. One of my all time favorite products used to be the Eve Lom cleansing balm ($80 for 100 ml), but now I used Banila clean it zero or Body Shop cleaning butter ($13-19 for the same amount of product). Instead of the Lancome eye makeup remover I use Bifesta – which I picked up in Japan a few years ago and is amazing! There are a lot of French pharmacy items that are also excellent and not expensive.
However, I must admit than when I can get a discount on the Eve Lom cleaning like Sephora VIB code time I still pick it up – the smell!! I just love it.

November 27, 2018 at 12:13 pmI love Anastasia brow wiz but I love NYX micro brow pencil even more! The Anastasia product is too soft with a small amount for the price. NYX is an improvement for sure.

November 27, 2018 at 7:30 pmNot really a dupe but I find kiel’s products to be well priced for the quality. I use their cleansing oil as well as face oils.

November 27, 2018 at 9:29 pmI’ve seen Tatcha products on Costco’s website (never in-store) so you might want to check there. They also have some very boutique perfumes- Serge Lutens, Byredo, Creed…

November 28, 2018 at 7:43 amNot a dupe, but I find Black Friday has been a good time to restock on skin care because brands that don’t normally go on sale have discounts on their brand websites. Since so many websites have a “Cyber week” it might be worth still looking? At Target I like the Yes To Carrots brand and Pacifica and Alba Botanicals body washes.

November 28, 2018 at 10:12 amI live in Southern CA and I’ve seen Tatcha’s cleansing oil in store. I’ve also purchased other Tatcha products from Costco’s website so it’s worth a look 🙂

November 29, 2018 at 7:50 amNot sure if it’s a dupe but I used to buy expensive foundation from Dior and Estee Lauder. Ever since I found the Hydroxatone BB Cream from Costco (cost like $20 for 2pack!!), I’ve ditched all other foundation products! It just works great for me. One thing I still splurge on is serums. Not sure if I dupes will ever work there!

November 29, 2018 at 10:22 amAnother Tatcha cleansing oil addict here! I definitely took advantage of Black Friday sales to re-stock. I have used the Burt’s Bees as well, and really like it. So much of what sells me on products is the packaging….and Tatcha is just so good at that, in my opinion. I guess I’m shallow that way, lol!
My favorite mascara (and I have tried LOTS) is MAC Haute & Naughty. A great dupe is Maybelline Voluminous Lash Paradise.
I follow the Beauty LookBook blog, and Sabrina sometimes does “dupes” posts that are excellent. Strongly recommend. 🙂

November 29, 2018 at 8:06 pmHi Kathy, I love your book recommendations but I have a hard time going back to find them on the blog. Is there a list somewhere of your book choices that I’m missing? Love the blog, keep up all your good work!

November 30, 2018 at 12:30 pmI don’t but then I use mostly Asian Beauty brands for my make-up skincare. Staples like cleansing oil, eye make-up remover and mascara, I have definite favorites that work for me. That’s not to say I don’t experiment with other stuff but more often than not, they don’t work as well which ends up being a waste of money. Base make-up and other skincare stuff like creams, serums etc., I like to try new stuff.

December 1, 2018 at 6:12 amI used some dupes of SKII Essence, but recently caved and went back (using the Sephora code)! The others worked well, but SKI
I has that edge. For mascara, I highly recommend
Glossier…it is fabulous!

December 3, 2018 at 8:33 pmIt’s not as cheap as the Burt’s Bees version, but I love Kiehls’ Midnight Recovery cleansing oil. It’s effective, smells divine and costs less than the Tatcha version!
For the rest of my skincare I mostly use Clarins — the lotus oil is an excellent dupe for the much more $$$ True Botanicals version. Plus it hit the market way before, so it’s not technically a “dupe” 🙂
