Weekend Update

1. On my wishlist this week: this great faux shearling coat, from Stand.

I really love almost everything I’ve come across from this brand – they have the cutest outerwear! And the prices are reasonable. Everything is very chic and has a stylish detail but isn’t too out there – this little jacket is my favorite but (of course) they are out of my size. So I’m waiting. I also really like this pink coat (and the leopard version too).

PS: I had this brand confused with Staud for some time, which also has kind of a similar aesthetic. Anyone else?

2. An interesting article about how Apple’s entry into the TV market is shaping content. No sex please! So fascinating in particular from a business perspective…just thinking about how Apple is limited in ways that many of its competitors are not.

3. A nice piece from The Coveteur, on Catharine Becket, Sotheby’s Jewelry Vice President, and some of her thoughts on jewelry.

4. So many great reviews of Hedi Slimane’s show for Celine but here’s a very good one, via Vanessa Friedman at the NYT. And then follow up with one of my favorite pieces from last year, via Cathy Horyn, about the meaning of Phoebe Philo. And then, end with Robin Givhan’s piece: Wanted: Fashion Designers Who Respect Women.

5. This week I read The Fifth Risk, by Michael Lewis.

I really respect and admire nearly everything that Michael Lewis writes, so I had pre-ordered this book basically months back, when I first heard about it. To be honest I was a little apprehensive – if you’re like me you almost wince reading the news lately, it’s just like there’s only so much bad news you can take in a day. And yet it is all happening and it isn’t good to close your eyes, either. The Fifth Risk is a very objective, deeply researched work into what happens when a bunch of people with no experience in government suddenly find themselves in high positions…and how such risks might be mitigated. Of course, it was a fascinating and often painful read (but there are some great stories too). And being a Lewis book, there’s at least a few heroes. If you liked any of his past work, if you want to be more informed about the government and the United States and what could possibly be done to preserve its future, I highly recommend The Fifth Risk.

I love Lewis but was going to pass on this one – precisely because of how you described how I feel about the current news and government – too painful to take more and I don’t want to read anything related to it! But you are also right that it’s equally unsettling to just shut your ears about it. Maybe I will give it a try after all.

I always login to your Weekend Updates, eager to see what treats you have in store for us. Like a kid in a candy store, I scroll through looking for the article that grabs my attention first. This morning, it was the amazing interview with Catharine Becket. When I read that she passed on the Faberge lighter, I gasped. Now that I’ve calmed down, I’ll go back and read the rest of your always great posts. It’s like Christmas every Friday morning.

The faux shearling coat is made from 100% polyester and is one of those toxic items that destroys the planet. Polyester should be used only as a very last resort, it retains odour like anything!
