Weekend Update

1. Eyeing this week: this very cute Topshop zebra skirt.

I’ve been very into zebra lately. Actually it started with this Proenza skirt, which is still so gorgeous but I just don’t have the lifestyle (and the accompanying amazing coat, which is I have neither the lifestyle, body, or budget for). I really want to add something in this print though, so this skirt caught my eye. Actually I like the whole outfit. I can see the skirt pairing with a simple white t like in the photo, or a black turtleneck…super easy and chic.

2. In terms of my own style church, one of the objects of worship is definitely La Lauren Santo Domingo. This Harpers Bazaar article was a great little peek into her style – and after that, read this piece, via Savoir Flair, on power dressing.

3. A book I cannot wait to read is Billion Dollar Whale. Not since Bad Blood have I anticipated a business book this much! Unfortunately I have a very long reading list, although I think this might leapfrog. Until then, enjoy this excellent excerpt, about how to buy your way into Leonardo DiCaprio’s inner circle, via The Hollywood Reporter.

4. An interesting article, via The Guardian, about the phenomenon in France of those in the creative industry getting paid minimum wage, all while flying business class and being gifted expensive accessories. I always wonder about some of the sellers on eBay/Vestaire. It seems like some are obviously in the industry.

5. This week I finished Runaway, by Alice Munro.

Have you ever read Alice Munro? You’ve probably heard of her. I had, but to be honest had never read anything, I just considered her one of those “literary canon” writers that was above my grade. I’ve been on a short story kick however, and she is widely considered the master, so I picked Runaway to start with, and was quickly sucked in. She is so amazing! Definitely a slower writer than some might prefer…and her stories are largely set in rural Canada (which I love). But so often after reading one of her stories I would have to sit and think for a few minutes, which I think is the ultimate feeling you want with a book. If you like short stories, and are looking for something thoughtful to read before going to sleep at night, I highly recommend Runaway.

I love the zebr print skirt. Billion Dollar Whale is a must read! Parties are super lavish, crazier than CRA. Money is cheap when it’s not yours, is so true. Have a great weekend.

Hi Katherine! I have been wanting to read books by Alice Munro as well. Pedro Almodovar based the movie Julieta on Runaway. All of his movies, whether I like them or not, have stayed with me . I love them. Bad Education is my favorite. I did enjoy Julieta.

    Interesting Guardian article!

I found this one similarly interesting:
    https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/20/fashion/italy-luxury-shadow-economy.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Ffashion&action=click&contentCollection=fashion&region=rank&module=package&version=highlights&contentPlacement=2&pgtype=sectionfront

It seems to reemphasize that many of the big luxury brands spend energy and resources on business and marketing, as the Guardian article states, rather than creatives or production staff.

I’m just about finishing up the Billion Dollar Whale, and it does give a bit of an insight to how crazy and the allure that Hollywood can be. It is even more mind-blowing when you live in the country that was pillaged, and realize that none of it was fiction, all fact. It’s an easy read, for what can be quite a heavy subject.
