Weekend Update

1. This week: eyeing this excellent corduroy skirt, via Elizabeth and James.

I’ve been searching for the perfect corduroy skirt for some time. For a while I was thinking about this Uniqlo – but I just felt there was something off – I find something a little bulky about the pockets (though of course they are of course very useful). And of course it’s way less expensive (ugh). There’s just something about this Elizabeth and James that’s perfect though (maybe the buttons? the cut?), and I’ve long learned that when I buy the lesser version of anything I want, I just end up with a the “real” version anyway. What do you think?

PS: It also comes in a very pretty and also versatile dusty rose.

2. So I’ve recently been on a “long crime pieces kick”. It’s a thing I go through periodically. I’ve read through a dozen in the past week. Here’s a favorite, via Longform and originally from the St Peterburg Times, about a string of murders in Florida.

3. An utterly charming piece, via GQ, from the head of the silks department, Christophe Goineau. I love it! I love him. I would love to have lunch with him. I’d ask him to critique my outfit and to be as blunt as possible. Wouldn’t you?

4. One of my favorite sorts of articles, the “billionaire supervillain” genre – read this fascinating piece on Vinod Khosla, via The NY Times.

5. This week, I finished Bring Up The Bodies, by Hilary Mantel.

I read this purely due to reader feedback that even though I found Wolf Hall slow (which I mentioned a few weeks back), I just had to give Mantel’s second book on Cromwell, Bring Up The Bodies, a try (by the way, I’ve always loved the title). Thank you to everyone who said I should, because I loved this one! It moved fast, faster than Wolf Hall, I was engrossed the entire time, and as always, was in awe of Mantel’s gorgeous writing. Highly, highly recommend Bring Up The Bodies.

St. Peterburg article.. I was interested to find out what happened to the family, then I regret reading it because it is so haunting. But at the same time, it is eye opening because evil lurks where you least expect it. In this case, the guy looked trustworthy and there were 3 of them.

Their father was right. If he had joined them, that coward evil man would not have offered his girls that boat ride.

Forensic Files on PBS covers similar stories with more detail in case you are into those.

The NYT article was great. Thank you for sharing! I do like his purple wall color background. Very regal. I would hate for his case to win. I love walking at remote CA beaches. Public beaches are so crowded nowadays.

The pricier corduroy shirt is cute. Much better than uniqlo’s. Although, I am not sure if it is still in style esp with the A line. Seems a bit 80s. But that is just my opinion. It may be very cute and stylish on you though.

    Have a great weekend.

The St. Petersburg article…I started reading it and then had to get up, check all the doors were locked and turned on the home alarm…in broad daylight. I had to finish it, but it was terrifying.

The St. Petersburg article was haunting. So well done, but so sad. I couldn’t stop reading, even though I finished well past when I should have been in bed. So thank you for sharing, I think? 🙂

Does one need to read Wolf Hall before Bring Up the Bodies?

It’s recommended but it’s not necessary…just know that it’s at the point where Henry is now married to Anne Boleyn.
