Weekend Update

1. Like most of you, it’s very hot where I am right now, and thus very high on my list currently are these Tory Burch sandals.

These are SO cute on. The ring is so unusual and it’s just such a sleek, stunning sandal. That being said I’ve been going back and forth because I’m afraid of the ring rubbing against my foot and irritating it after a while. It was fine when I tried it on earlier, but these are the issues that only come up at like, hour 6 outside. What do you think?

2. GQ has had some great pieces lately. This week I’m sharing this feature on Otto Warmbier, the North Korean hostage later returned to the US. A tragic and much more complicated story than I ever knew.

3. Purseblog started a series called “Closet Confessionals” and it’s really good! I’d love to hear your thoughts on their inaugural edition. I like this woman because she seems willing to share and open herself up to what will inevitably be criticism. She seems responsible enough to me, and is having a good time.

4. I love this piece, via The Hollywood Reporter, about the story behind the Crazy Rich Asians movie. There’s a great line in there from Nina Jacobson about wanting the movie to be a “comp” for other Asian/Asian-American projects and this really struck me. If you’ve read some of the marketing description for my own book there’s often a mention of Crazy Rich Asians (this is what’s referred to when they say a comp – a comparison) and that’s because in the creative/media industries, it is so much easier to get a project through if they have an example already of a very successful one in your “genre”. Family Trust is quite different than CRA (for starters, it’s more like Crazy Middle Class) but I never mind the comparison because without CRA and even decades old books like The Joy Luck Club, maybe my book would have never been acquired. One step at a time!

5. This week I finished Nomadland, by Jessica Bruder.

Like many of you know, the cost of living in the Bay Area right now is incredibly high, and often times out of reach for many local workers. One of the impacts this has led to is more RVs in the area – one of the hot recurring debates in my neighborhood NextDoor is between those wanting to get rid of all the RVs (citing crime, zoning, etc) versus others urging more tolerance and patience. Although I understood this phenomenon at a base level, I really didn’t understand why a lot of people might voluntarily make the choice to sell their home/move out of their apartment and move into an RV…what the background of a typical “workcamper” might be, and how they got there. I highly recommend Nomadland.

Thanks for all the great recommendations – both clothing and reading!! That Rebecca Taylor dress is feeding my shirtdress addiction! Also, I think it’s priced slightly less on the RT site… Have a great weekend!

Thank you for the PB new series! I just bought an Evelyne gm (eBay) based off of your review 🙂
(And yes I think I’m going to do a follow up what’s in my bag for that!)

I saw your book’s early reviews on goodreads.com . 4 out of 5 stars! That is fantastic for a debut. Will you be releasing another book next year? Please do tell us the process of releasing this book such as necessary steps and hurdles you encountered one day.

The references to those previous Asian books now blockbuster movies are exciting! I sense a movie deal on the way. Great job!

Thank you for the Purseblog link! I didn’t realize it just debuted. I thought it was ongoing.

I enjoyed reading her advice at the end -resisting the urge to obsess over a material good if it means neglecting your children and household. Purseforum is all about eye candy and building the desire to buy things we don’t necessarily need. It a great marketing tool. I have stayed away from that site, and my bank account is happy. No RV living for me hopefully when I am of senior age. Ha!

It is a good series. I feel it will be pretty redundant with more entries posted, not knowing who these people really are and future ones may be of below average income, but it was a good initial entry. I hope her advice at the bottom hits home for the shopoholics with children to support.

My honest, perhaps unreasonable, reaction to the inaugural PurseBlog Closet Confessional: her household income is only $600,000 (and not guaranteed) and she’s spending like that?! Live-in nanny, personal trainer, in-home massage, first-class travel, horses, not to mention bags — I heard cost of living in Georgia is cheap but I don’t think it’s that cheap — and it seems she carries a balance on her credit cards. I hope her husband is socking away a big chunk of his take-home into savings/investments.

By focusing only on bags and spending, the Confessional doesn’t really give a full financial picture — I guess it’s not meant to, but I wish people would talk about how much people save. Has anyone in Money Diaries actually allocated their money to savings first? Maybe it’s because I’ve been talking to some of the young people in my company and realized how so few of them are saving or are knowledgeable about saving…I just wish there would be more examples of responsible financial behavior instead of envy-inducing consumerism.

I shall get off my high horse now.

This is completely random… do you wear makeup? If so then can you do a tutorial for day makeup look?

I don’t daily but I can share what I use when I do use it (but I’m not sure if anyone should be emulating my day look, to be honest!).

Interesting read on Otto Warmbier, may his soul Rest In Peace.

Inaugural Purseblog Closet Confessional was indeed an eye opener to how one can go overboard with an obsession. I enjoy reading Purseblog and PurseForum but many have to realise that it’s just another informative platform.

I can’t wait to get hold of Nomadland, which unfortunately is not available at local bookstore ?

Thank you for the recommendations. Hope you had a great weekend.

I like those Tory Burch sandals, but I have the same concern about the buckle. Several reviewers said they had a problem with it…
