No Frills

Do you all have a certain something in clothing/fashion that you love, that you’re drawn to, but you know you shouldn’t wear? And maybe you used to buy some pieces earlier, but then you saw yourself in photographs and you thought oh no, I definitely should not? Or maybe it’s something that you thought used to be good, but now you might have aged out of it? But either way you continue to be drawn..

For me, this is frilly clothing. And florals. And tassels. And lace. I actually love all of these. I love girly. It’s kind of embarrassing, but when I watch Real Housewives of New York I can definitely understand the logic behind how Tinsey Mortimer selects most of her outfits. I like frills and a big skirt and florals and overall that sort of “look”. I just know, through much trial and error, that it doesn’t usually look very good on me.

For a long time I tried. I was very into it all. Floral prints. Tassels on everything. And frills, especially on the straps and neck and occasionally the skirt. Anthropologie sold me many items. But then inevitably, most of the time, I’d find myself not liking how I actually looked in them – even though I really, really liked them on the hanger. And then I decided well I like what I like but what I really like is not wasting money and having a closet full of items I don’t wear, so I decided to pare it down and go for more basics, neutral colors, streamlined. And I found that I liked how I felt in those clothes, and have been fairly happy since.

But still…when I’m browsing online, I still find myself drawn to certain pieces, even when I know I should say no. To counteract this, I have a few rules:

  • Ruffles only on one part of the garment (like the straps, or on the slit). And think CAREFULLY. Will you look like Betty Boop?
  • Solid colored outerwear and sweaters (the one exception is camo).
  • Ulla Johnson is my one general designer exception (she has girly stuff and it usually looks good and photographs well too!). Like the dress above, which is one of my favorites that she does each season. It has ruffles and tassels (which I just noticed, are tied off kilter on one strap). But I don’t feel terribly juvenile in it.
  • Skirt not to exceed A-line in width

And more or less, these have kept me in line. But I still like to look…and of course, I’ve had some late night purchases that I’ve regretted by the time they arrived (which is why I try to buy from Nordstrom).

I’d like to ask – is there any sort of fashion trend/style that you love, but you’ve had to give up over the years? Or that you just plain know you have to stay away from?

It’s not so much a style but certain colors that I’ve given up on. For example, I love olive and beige tops but I just look so blah in them!

Midi dresses. They are not flattering on my build but they are so damn easy. Maxi dresses are a tad more fussy when you walk/bike/go about life. Shorter dresses are fussy too coz who goes through life without bending ? Midi is easy. It keeps me warm given that Bay Area is always windy. I have gone through phases where I am thankful for the ease of wear followed by periods of realizing how meh they look on me. But there comes a time when you got to wear what you want to wear – just for the joy of it 🙂

Wrap dress for work. There are so many adorable ones out there but somehow I haven’t been able to find one that works for me! Either the neckline is scandalously low, or it bulges, or the waistline sits at a weird spot. I basically give it up.

Yes! I can’t wear any without double sided tape.

I like it on you— it’s quite coquettish!! Basically anything trendy looks odd on me, or maybe I’m just projectig because I feel I’m trying too hard. On the other hand, I end up wearing ultra classics/basics, and then I feel I look 100 years old. (But an extremely well preserved and stylish one ?)

Could I ask for a random post please? Children’s clothing: to save or splurge.

Feel you on the classics conundrum. And I will try on the post though I buy most clothes at Gap and Hanna Andersson!

I forever purchase boho large volume tops, with large sleeves, and not fitted waists. Being that I am petite, with a larger bust – this is a dumb move. I always end up looking far larger than I am. I somehow in my mind imagine myself to be 5’9 and waif-like and keep gravitating towards voluminous tops.

OMG same same with the boho tops. They are so gorgeous! But they never look good on me.

I love to wear feminine frilly florals especially in the summer by Loveshackfancy and Ulla Johnson. Its so much fun to dress like a little girl sometimes! It brightens my day and makes me happy. Btw I’m in my early forties. I live and work in Manhattan so my day to day wardrobe is all business and I have the serious mood to match most days.

So funny – I feel like I’ve gone through the opposite lately. I always wore dresses because they are flattering on pear-shaped me and easy 1 piece dressing, but since becoming a mom they are just NOT practical at all.
When I was on maternity leave I pretty much lived in leggings and tunics but one can only do that for so long…
So I have been wearing pants and tops most days now when I’m home, but just can’t seem to find a flattering combination on me. I prefer high waisted jeans but can’t find comfortable ones, and for some reason it has been impossible to find looser, longer (not tunic, I just don’t want my lower back showing all the time) t-shirts. Any suggestions welcome!!

These might seem sort of simple but they are so cost effective if you just want to give them a try for the playground or running about town. ( I was extremely skeptical at first but the sweet girl at Nordstrom convinced me ) but might I recommend TopShop jeans? They have a sidney style which is medium-high waist and then a more high waisted version. The jeans have nice colors, nice stretch – hold their shape after washing and are in nice colors.
