1. This week, I’ve been eyeing this excellent Marie Antoinette candle, from Cire Trudon.
There’s just something about this, no? Totally a decor piece. Because I like multi function I’ve always liked candles as decor, and I think this is perfect. I kind of like the idea of it semi melted, like an indent in her head, but not sure if it will make my house look ghoulish.
2. An interesting article, via Bloomberg, about a formal fund manager who stole $100 million from his clients and now is living a life of luxury on the Cote de Azur. Though that is sort of the point of stealing so much money? I totally think he planned it.
3. An older but great article about Her Grand Highness, Lauren Santo Domingo, and her jewelry box, via Vanity Fair.
4. The topic of Johnny Depp and his finances and the evolution of his career is like Theranos – I can’t read enough pieces about it. I could read a whole book. Here’s a great piece, via Rolling Stone.
5. This week, I read Convenience Store Woman, by Sayaka Murata, translated by Ginny Tapley Takemori. The story is exactly as it sounds – the life of a convenience store worker, who has worked at the same store for nearly two decades.
In short: I loved this book. Honestly I love almost all translated Japanese fiction, especially contemporary fiction, that I come across – there’s just something that I find so appealing in the tone of most of the books, that draws me in. I would say that the protagonist is my favorite sort here… somewhat removed from society, unmarried, without children, doing the same “dead end” job for more than a decade, but doesn’t understand why society thinks she should be doing other things with her life if she’s perfectly happy. And really, isn’t that a good point? Highly recommend Convenience Store Woman, especially if you love a good detached main character who simply doesn’t understand why they have to coo over babies.

June 29, 2018 at 6:52 pmKat, I have to tell you I just finished reading Tampa, based on your recent recommendation. Wow – disturbing is right. I enjoyed it, though. She certainly has a vivid imagination. I just can’t see an attraction to 14 year old boys but, hey, there are lots of sickos out there. Thanks for your recommendation!

July 1, 2018 at 9:50 pmHi Jaime, you are welcome and I’m so glad that you enjoyed the book. I had the same reaction as you but Nutting is just such a great writer and the main character is undeniably fascinating, in an awful sort of way. It does make me look differently at those articles with arrested teachers and how some people don’t take it seriously simply because it’s an attractive female with a teenage boy.

If you like translated Japanese fiction you must read The Eternal Zero by Naoki Hyakuta. One of my favorite stories of all time. I actually saw the film adaption first on a flight to Japan, and then read the book (the move is excellent, but the book is of course better, so I’d suggest starting with that if you’re interested). Unfortunately I don’t think it’s available on kindle, but it is on amazon:
