Weekend Update

First of all – thank you all so much for your wonderful comments on my anniversary post!I feel so lucky to have such wonderful readers. I always welcome your comments and feedback, anytime!

Now…getting onto the weekend:

1. First sharing an excellent little bag – this belt bag/crossbody bag from Wandler, at a very nice price to boot.

I’ve been very into the fanny pack concept as of late. I ordered this much cheaper one from Everlane, only for it to arrive with a broken clasp, and then when I went to exchange, they were sold out. Augh! I’m thinking this Wandler may be a nice version (though I’d probably wear mine mostly cross-body). Have any of you tried this brand yet?

PS: For those looking for a large version, there’s this great one, at Net-A-Porter. I’ve found that Wandler is cheapest at Matches, but they don’t have this Miles style.

2. An interesting article, via Fashionista, about how counterfeit handbags are getting harder to spot. This is a very real and frightening problem. There was this Van Cleef item that one of my favorite resale sites had listed the other day, and I was very very tempted. But something just looked off. And I couldn’t figure it out! Finally I sent it off to a good friend who is a MAJOR buyer and she found the mistake after ten minutes of scrutiny. We emailed the site. But yeah it really makes me think twice about buying resale.

3. Did you know that a 26 year old now runs Teen Vogue? I had no idea. Also, they meditate before their meetings (hence the photo above). You know I totally admire this but I also know that I could never work in a company like this, I would be the curmudgeon in the corner that never showed up to yoga cocktails or whatever it is people do as team builders these days.

4. You know what I’ve been really, really, looking forward to, once my kids get bigger? A Disney cruise. After this NY Times article however, I have mixed feelings (but will still end up going for sure). Have any of you been?

5. This week I’m recommending The Bettencourt Affair, by Tom Sancton.

This book has it all. The super rich? Yes. A (possible) scheming gold digger? Yes. A super pissed off family? A political scandal? Blackmail? Yes, yes, yes, and it’s all true to boot!  I don’t read too much non-fiction, but when I do, it needs to be super engaging, and this really satisfied. This is also the kind of book where I feel like after you read it, you understand a little more of French/Parisian culture. Highly recommend The Bettencourt Affair.

Also, for a preview, you can check out Sancton’s earlier piece in Vanity Fair (which I recommended a few months ago).

Yes! I think it’s quite popular to fake because I can imagine the pink was popular in Asia.

Since I occasionally purchase items from sites such as TRR, I am concerned now about authenticity. Can you tell me if that was where you saw it? I have a feeling……………..

No it wasn’t! And at least TRR from what I’ve heard is pretty reasonable if you feel like the item is a fake. I think they don’t have the strictest controls though so just be cautious!

Yes , Katherine! Please share what was off with the VCA item! I buy resale if I’m familiar with the design. I’m familiar with the Yurman studs I purchased. I’m iffy on the Tiffany studs because they are an old design. I’m still researching those.

Yes, do your research! What was off was something with the clasp…quite different than the one my friend has, and hers was directly from the boutique.

I would love to know the VCA item you meant (I have a couple of ideas) but I understand why you may not be able to share that info here!

Katherine , in my humble opinion I thinks it’s best you missed out on it! Porcelain will break if you drop it!

If you really want the pink porcelain, you could ask your SA If you can do an SO. This way, there will be no questions about authenticity. I cannot attest to how fragile VCA porcelain are but I have not heard about anyone breaking them …. It would be safer than a bracelet although I do know some ladies who have SOed porcelain bracelets and have not heard of any issues.

Thank you Michelle! The silver lining part was that it broke before I purchased! I was trying them on at Neiman’s! Praise The Lord they didn’t make me pay???!

If you’re looking for something similar to the Everlane hip pouch, I’d suggest Herschel Supply for a nice simple one. As a mom of littles like you, I find it super handy! Unlike a crossbody, my kids legs never get tangled in it when I’m putting them in their carseats 😛 And I never forget it anywhere because it’s strapped to me – I don’t even have to unbuckle it when I’m driving!

Interesting. I’ve been looking at the resale market lately for a new everyday bag. To use the words of this blog, I’ve been aiming for a “bag which is not a Birkin” (perhaps a Massai or Victoria, or in my dreams a Bolide). I was hoping that the more understated bags would be less faked, but perhaps not? What do you think?

You may have read, but it bears mentioning, Shipping Out (also known as A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again) by David Foster Wallace? Despite having grown up surrounded by cruise ships, I’ve never been on a cruise, so my imaginings of what it might be like are entirely from this article.

Thank you! I read this years back but it was wonderful to read again. I love how my readers can chat about DFW and Bolides in the same comment!

For everyday bag – Massai and Victoria are both great and in my experience less likely to be faked (Massai least so). Bolides I have seen fakes but if you go through a reputable resale site it should be better. Luckily Bolides have that luscious lambskin lining that is harder to do well.

        Thank you for the advice!

One of the things I enjoy about this blog is the wonderful mix of fascinating articles that I wouldn’t come upon otherwise, and practical shopping advice 🙂

Regarding Disney cruise, my sister and her family went last year for the first time and they loved it. They’re going again later this year. My sister and her husband have three little ones aged 7, 5 and 3.

From California, and we’ve done one Disney Cruise for 4 nights from Miami (likely the same as the author of the article) and just signed up for a 7 night cruise from Orlando in Summer of 2019. My husband initially grumbled when he saw the price and that it was Disney, after the first cruise, he was sold. It’s much better than taking our younger kids (under 5) to Disneyland and Disney World.

I say go for it, with a slight disclaimer that you should definitely do the one with Castaway Cay instead of the Pacific Ocean ones.

I have never gone on any cruise and have no plans to try the Disney Cruise. I would rather take the girls to Disneyland. So far we have gone at least twice a year, sometimes both local, others, one local and another international (Tokyo Disney and HK Disney). My theory is that if I am frustrated, I can’t exactly step off the boat (port calls aside) but if I am on land, I could at least check out other places 😀

I forgot to add that the girls LOVE Disney and we enjoy experiencing Disney with them as well so we are good with visiting the theme parks.

I keep meaning to ask, did you (or any other readers) read the ‘skincare scam’ article at The Outline? I’ve been following all the articles about this “controversy”, Vox just did a good overview:
