Do any of you have a ritual when you buy new items? Do you have certain strange behaviors, like not using a new items for a certain period of time after you buy it?
I was recently reminded of a habit of my own, after I got my new Constance bag. Going to bed the following night, my husband asked, “why is there a stool by the bed?”
And I was a little embarrassed and said, that’s where my new bag is sleeping!! Whenever I get something new that I really like (that’s not clothing, though if I could find a way to display a good coat by my bed I would), I always have to find a way to have it near me when I sleep.
It’s a habit from when I was a little kid and I’d like to have my favorite toy near me at night. I would usually leave my new toy in an absolutely pristine state for a few days, then rip off the packaging and tags and use them happily. I’m doing the same for my Constance, its maiden voyage was this weekend for dinner. I have to admit, I did feel a little thrill/sadness when I finally ripped off the plastic. I guess accessories are my toys now.
Do you have a ritual for favorite new items? How do you “break them in” if at all?

October 23, 2017 at 11:10 amHaha, so cute and vivid!! I am not aware of any such rituals of mine, but maybe I should think harder… The thing is I lose interest in whatever I buy very quickly, even if it’s something that I had really wanted. The moment I take something home, it just becomes another possession. And I tend to be a bit stressed about it, especially if it’s expensive, since I don’t know if I’ve made the right choice or that I’m going to get the expected use out of it. So I leave it be for some time. And hope that I’d be just as happy as the first time I saw it after a while. So maybe that’s my ritual – to cool off and to fall in love all over again.

October 23, 2017 at 2:00 pmAnna, I am the same way! I can lust for something and then when I own it, the pleasure seems to be gone. When will it ever be enough? Is the pleasure all in “the chase?”

October 23, 2017 at 12:03 pmHi Katherine,
Your new item ritual is absolutely normal – isn’t it? Special purchases are treated like guests in my home, they relax on cushioned chairs while I fuss around them.

October 23, 2017 at 12:56 pmHi Katherine,
I don’t use my new items right away. I like to take a peek at them stored in my closet or drawer. I am grateful for my purchases and want to give them the respect that they deserve!

October 23, 2017 at 1:08 pmHi Kat, as soon as I read this post, I had to laugh and smile. Your obsession with new items you love and needing to bring it to your room for the night is exactly what my son does! He’s been doing that since he was a toddler and is now 21 years old. But old habits die hard. I’ll still find his new purchases up in his room, even a new fishing rod. And as for myself, I’ll wear or use new purchases right away. If they sit unused for too long, they end up being returned ?

October 23, 2017 at 5:25 pmI let things “age” before using them. Let them hang/sit in the closet where they can “meld”
into my wardrobe.

October 23, 2017 at 8:09 pmHi Kat,
Before I was married, I usually put my new purchase (or my fav gift) on the other side of the bed so I could take a look at it before I went to sleep and see it the first thing in the morning. Weird, I know! Now, since my bed is occupy by two people, I pet my things and scrunitize it before bedtime and store it away in a closet. It drives my husband crazy sometimes.

October 23, 2017 at 11:09 pmThis post is adorable and so relatable! My “new purchase ritual” varies depending on the nature of the item. I tend to let my more expensive purchases “marinate” before taking them out for a special night. Particularly exciting “cheap thrill” purchases are worn straight out of the store. Occasionally, when the mood strikes, I’ll try on my entire collection of (unworn) fancy dresses and twirl around my closet. Perhaps I am trying to justify their cost-per-wear by sneaking these try-on’s in between actual wears!

October 24, 2017 at 11:39 amPre cats & kids, I used to sleep with my new bag, right between mine and the husband’s pillow 😀 Now I tend to leave it in the box and when I feel ready, I will take it out and place it on a high shelf so I can see it 🙂 As for when I bring it out, depends on what colors I am wearing and where I am going.
