Since we’re wrapping up sale season (and going out with a bang with Chanel, that is if you can find your size), I wanted to share with you some of my favorite spring/summer sale purchases over the past few years. Sale time is one of the best shopping times for obvious reasons (lower prices! yeah!) but also one of the most dangerous periods where one is most at risk for splurging on never-wear items like holographic leggings. Now I try to really limit myself, and fortunately have found some items I love!
1. J.Crew cotton fisherman sweater. This is my favorite summer sweater! I bought it last year during one of J.Crew’s markdown sales. I wear it all the time and I love that it’s a full cotton blend, no synthetics. I think I got it something like 50% off. This is one of those items that I am approaching cost-per-wear in the cents now versus dollars – and aren’t those the best? For those looking for a current season version, J.Crew has lots of different sweaters (and more) on markdown.
2. Miu Miu slingback gingham sandals. These are probably one of my “funner” pairs of shoes, sad and lonely in a closet filled with more boring black and nude pumps. I snagged these on second markdown, which I count as a small miracle since I was told by several sales associates when I was looking for them that they were sold out in my size…at full price.
I bookmarked their page on Bergdorf Goodman and one day I randomly decided to visit…and saw that my size, and only my size, was in stock and available! I placed the order immediately and held my breath until they shipped. They arrived safe and sound! I wear them whenever I want a “pick me up” from my closet (and on the 4th of July).
3. Old Navy floral chambray shirtdress. Old Navy is cheap enough at regular prices, but I really try not to ever pay full price for anything from the Gap corporate family (Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy). There are coupon codes almost everyday so this is a pretty easy task. I got this dress below for something like ~50% off so under $20 with tax, and I’ve worn it quite a few times already this summer. Long enough (for me) to be conservative for work and the cotton fabrication keeps things cool.
4. Valentino trench coat. This is a spring season coat and buy, although I wear it year round. It’s one of my favorite light coats in my wardrobe, but if I could do it over again, I would probably wait until second cut for this one. I bought it something like ~40% off, and being greedy, would have wanted even more! I find that Valentino doesn’t sell as quickly on markdown as say, Chanel.
So, what are some of your favorite sale purchases that you made? Were they items that you would have bought even at full price? How did you score your deals? Please share!

June 23, 2014 at 1:51 pmDear Katherine,
What a stunning trench! I find it doubtful in your popular tiny size that that trench would have lasted to 2nd markdown, no?* Those Miu Miu sling backs were pure serendipity to find on second markdown, even you must admit that! Love those and I am sure they look stunning on you!
This is such an interesting topic — favorite sale item? I would have to say it would be a toss up between three Hermes scarves, and twillies I got for $25USD each at one of their coveted sample sales and some of my beloved Chanel shoes I got at their second markdown on a total lark.
Speaking of Chanel, I just received my invite to their Private Sale — I don’t think those espadrilles will be on sale, but it is a great time to pick up a pair of classic Ballerines at a discount either for yourself or for a loved one especially if it’s something one does not have yet have in their wardrobe and wants.
*unless you have a favorite SA who will “hide” items for you as I have personally witnessed at both large department stores (Nordstrom) and in boutiques (Chanel — not for me, sadly).
🙂

June 24, 2014 at 7:19 amHi Ava, please do not tease with stories of Hermes sample sales! OMG.
I did some shopping at Chanel already and they had some great ballerinas! I hope you pick some up! No I am not lucky enough to have a “hiding” SA either – but if I ever do find one, I’ll hold on tight! LOL.

June 24, 2014 at 7:51 amRight off the top of my head, my best purchase was a navy Yves St Laurent wool-weave trench, so long ago I don’t even remember when, probably at Neiman Marcus or Saks… on sale for a ridiculous mark-down, and to this day I don’t understand why it ever made it to mark-down!! Every inch of it is classic, timeless, and absolutely beautiful. It is still a staple in my winter wardrobe and it still looks practically new. Every year when I pull it out I’m still amazed.

June 24, 2014 at 10:37 pmI adore your Valentino trench! I adored it so much I was *almost* going to be your trench coat twin when I saw it at the Valentino outlet in Switzerland. Alas, it wasn’t in my size…
I’m about to get a Marimekko BR top for more than 40% off though I wish I had gotten the skirt in kivet print. Otherwise, I’ve just been shopping for baby lately. My next purchase may be from someone on a forum though. What do you think of the Hermes silver CDC?

June 25, 2014 at 9:28 amValentino outlet! Wow 🙂
I love the look of the silver CDC but it was too heavy for me. If it’s ok on your wrist, get it! Such a great statement piece.
