I’ve received quite a few emails and questions about how much a 30cm Birkin can fit versus a 35cm, and whether each fit more or less than a Chanel bag, etc. A sweet reader (hi Andrea!) suggested that I do a post showing how much could fit in my two Hermes bags, and I thought that was a great idea! Here goes, and I hope this is helpful. A disclaimer that I tried to show a true representation of what I fit into each bag, and I tend to just “throw” my things into my bags – I’m not one of those people who do some kind of Tetris puzzle solution to try to fit the maximum amount of stuff. I’m sure if you were were organized than me, you could fit more.
left to right: 35cm Hermes Birkin, 30cm Hermes Birkin, Chanel jumbo bag
Standing upright
In case it isn’t self explanatory, the 35cm and 30cm for the Birkins refer to the length of the base of the bag – the 35 looks and is a LOT bigger though!
Chanel (single flap) Jumbo
So I thought I would do a progression of items – this is what I usually fit into a Chanel jumbo. My makeup bag, iPhone, little notebook, mints, long wallet, and sunglass case.
Hermes 30cm Birkin
The same fits comfortably into a 30cm Birkin…but I also add a large scarf/wrap/cardigan usually, and a magazine to read. Here, it’s The Economist because I am *ahem* Highly Intellectual. You could also probably fit an iPad or something similar and a bottle of water.
Hermes 30cm Birkin
Lots of room to spare – I don’t like filling to the top, the bag looks like a big stuffed rectangle then and it’s easy for pickpockets to grab your stuff.
Hermes 35cm Birkin
Now the 35cm…you can see I have everything that was in the 30cm, plus a beverage (love sparkling apple juice!). And I’m not actually an intellectual who reads The Economist – I’m actually a poser because I much prefer reading Bridget Jones Diary..!! The 35 fits an extra book easily. It could also probably fit a laptop and more.
Hermes 35cm Birkin
As you can see, there’s TONS of room to spare. The bag can easily fit in addition – papers for work, a laptop/tablet, and some snacks too. That’s what I usually add to it for travel/work. But the bag is way, way heavier! Even empty the 35cm probably weighs 2-3 lbs more than the 30cm – the 35 is not only larger but also made of a heavier leather. Here are a few more pictures of the bag with a laptop inside.
Hermes 35cm Birkin
Hermes 35cm Birkin
The laptop still fits inside (this is a 12′ laptop). So you can see, the 35cm fits a lot…but weighs a TON if you put this much inside.
You can see the 35cm on me in this post, and the 30cm on me in this post.
I also get asked a lot whether I would recommend a 35cm or a 30cm size Birkin, if I could only choose one to have. For me, my answer would be 30cm because that size is much easier to take from day to night. Here are some pros and cons
Hermes Birkin 30cm:
1. Easily goes from day to night
2. Lighter than 35cm (could be by pounds)
3. Some like the proportion better.
4. but…it doesn’t fit as much
5. It isn’t as handy for travel…or work, if you need to carry a bunch of stuff with you
6. Some think that it looks too “tiny” on taller people (I think it looks fine).
Hermes Birkin 35cm:
1. Great size for travel and everything else – shopping, work, it will be used on many occasions
2. Some people prefer the proportion/size.
3. Again…it fits so much more!!
4. but…some shorties think that the 35cm overwhelms them
5. Slightly more expensive than the 30cm
6. Can be quite a bit heavier! It makes a difference, trust me.
I hope this helps you all! Let me know if you have any further questions in the comments and I will try to answer.
PS: Looking for an easy tote but aren’t fully on board for the Birkin? My favorite under the radar but still totally luxury tote is by Bottega Veneta – beautiful and will last forever in black!
At under $250, this Michael Kors tote will last a long time and is sleek and work appropriate.

July 22, 2011 at 12:27 pmTHANK you for doing this posting! I can definitely get a better idea of which Kelly size to get, 32 or 35…3 cm doesn't sound like a lot but there is definitely a difference! Love all 3 bags!!!

July 22, 2011 at 12:40 pmFabulous post! So very informative – you should probably "sticky" this post if you can, as I'm sure a ton of readers, both present and future, would highly appreciate this kind of resource!
Do you own any Kellys? If you do, I would love a similar post for the Kelly, as I'm more of a Kelly girl myself. (Shoulder strap = Hands free = Essential for me.) 🙂
Thanks again, Katherine! Your blog is definitely one of my favorites! 😀

July 22, 2011 at 1:18 pmOh to afford such finery! I would LOVE to own a Chanel quilted purse and a Birkin, but unfortunately my student budget doesn't allow for such luxuries – thankfully ASOS does some lovely lookalikes! 🙂

July 22, 2011 at 1:28 pmHi! I've been loving your blog.
This post is much appreciated. While not interested in a Birkin in the future (I'm betting either would feel too heavy for me, since I like shoulder bags like the Trim or Marwari), I'm thinking to acquire a Chanel flap as my next bag. The comparisons help greatly to understand the size.
The color of your flap is incredible. I *long*. 🙂

July 22, 2011 at 1:56 pmHi Katherine, I echo everyone's comments about how informative this post is. I have decided on the smaller birkin. I'll use this post to show my husband what a great investment this bag is. And I know exactly what he'll say 'wow, how much is that bag, like $500 bucks?' thanks for the post!

July 22, 2011 at 2:04 pmNot that I'll ever be able to afford Hermes anything for a very very long time (IF EVER)… but I still love the pictures in this post! The progression is really fun 🙂 I lug around a lot of stuff and need all the room I can get, and that 35cm sure would look good on my arm in my dreamland alternate universe!

July 22, 2011 at 2:51 pmGreat post!! I had to sell my 35cm Birkin because the weight was just too much for me and I never put very much in it at all. But it was such a stunning bag, just like yours!!

July 22, 2011 at 2:54 pmThanks for sharing the information. Very useful, not that I could afford to buy Hermes anytime soon (lol). I always love bigger size in a bag. Love the color of your Hermes (taupe?) and of course the classic Chanel jumbo in red! Swoon! Have a great weekend!

July 22, 2011 at 3:23 pmThanks for doing this post, very informative. I don't think I will ever get to see one in real life so this info gives me some ideas of the size. Size 30cm seems like a nice size. I guess 25 is probably very small.

July 22, 2011 at 4:10 pmWow, great post, really interesting!! I am still too young/financially stretched to really invest in bags as nice as yours yet (especially because I am bad about shoes!!) but it was still a really interesting read!

July 22, 2011 at 5:11 pmKat, awsome information. It's helping a bunch with my Hermes research for a new bag. I'm leaning towards the 35 b/c i have knickknacks of my 4y.o to carry around, but the weight intimidates me. Do you know much about the 32?

Could you explain a little bit about the leathers, please? Which one is the most durable (ford, togo?) and which is the lightest? For my first (and maybe only) Birkin I'm planning to get 30cm in Eutope in some sturdy but preferable light leather…

July 23, 2011 at 12:14 amHi I really loved your information. Could you please tell us how much the Herme Birkin costs the 30cm and 35cm please. Thank you. If my mind serves me right the Chanel Classic jumbo is now 4200? Meduim 3900 and maxi is 4900? I know the prices just recently increased. But I have no idea about Herme. Your bags are gorgeous!

July 23, 2011 at 12:35 ami can only imagine really how heavy the birkin 35cm with laptop and all those stuff inside!seriously!
anyway i was staying in Evason Phuket, if you are going to Phuket, you should definitely stay there!
Or somewhere else so you let me know if its better than Evason!:D

July 23, 2011 at 2:10 amI've been eying the Birkin for a while now – did you have to go on the wait list? I heard awful things, like it takes 1-2 years to even see the bag you ordered.
The bags are, obviously, gorgeous. Are you going to expand the collection?

July 23, 2011 at 8:11 amThanks again Katherine for this post! As a bag aficionado as I am it will be a great clipping (again) for future use. As of this time I know I can't afford to have one.But who does not want chanel and birkin, right? But I still look it as an option, an investment or heirloom hehe for my daughters soon. But I bet this is a good comparison to what I'm struggling right.I'm torn betweenthe size of lv speedy 25-30.Somehow you gave such a great idea regarding size of a 5 foot inches gurl like me in which size to prefer..and maybe you can help me give your vote in which to prefer.:)
I know i'll be coming more often to this article for comments and your reply to feedbacks.Oh and I forgot to ask, is chanel heavy too like herme's birkin? Thanks!

July 25, 2011 at 1:03 am@Nelah25 to me is really small but a lot of ladies like it…try it out, a boutique should have a sample size for you to see 🙂
@marishberryof course! I will add that to my "to do post" list – for now the lightest leathers are box/chevre/vache liagee but the leather most easily purchased that is still light is Togo….Clemance is second heaviest and heaviest is Fjord for me..
@KI wish I owned a Kelly! One is definitely on my list. I own a mini one but don't think that counts 🙂
@SomeKindOfStyle OMG, the 35 is definitely the heaviest!
@Janice Liao Shiao do you mean the 32 HAC bag or a 32 Kelly? 🙂
Katherine
July 25, 2011 at 1:09 am@audrinajulia The Chanel jumbo is not so light but compared to the Birkin it is like a feather! Are you in the mkt for one? I might recommend trying to find a single flap Jumbo pre-loved, they are lighter and cheaper 🙂
@NicoleAngela Where do you live? 30/35/40 are all around $10k, give or take a thousand or so in the US – plus tax
@Anna Anna there is a list but for me that is usually for special ordered items – usually I let the SA know what I am looking for and they call me when things come in.
Thank you everybody for the sweet comments!!

July 25, 2011 at 2:27 pmThank you for this post! Very helpful! I don't want my bag to be heavy already when it's empty so I have a problem with the 35cm. 30cm is my choice but i am on the fence about a birkin because not sure I want everyone knowing how much I spent on a bag. It makes me feel uncomfortable. I wish they were under the radar because the quality is TDF!

July 26, 2011 at 9:25 amHi Katherine thank you for getting back to me so sweet. I live in New York. I just got back from the westcoast las vegas and the Herme store in the city center mall was closed and I didnt see any birkins in the window. This would be my first birkin. My bag collection is Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton and Chanel so I am very excited to get a Herme bag. I am 5'8" so I think for me the 35 would be awesome. When I went to Herme in Americana Mall in Manhassett Long Island NY they did not have any birkin out or kellys or anything. I do know I want the birkin black in togo 35mm ( silver or gold hardware) I really appreciaite your help because I can not find prices or information. Thank you in advance. Blessings and Peace. ;o)

July 27, 2011 at 9:54 pmLove your 30cm Birkin! I got to prance around a Hermes store with a 30cm on my arm for a few minutes one day (the store had just opened, so the SA's hadn't snobbified enough to mind my destitute little self touching their merch just yet). It's been on my wish list ever since…maybe for the big three-(uh)oh. 😉

May 11, 2012 at 7:56 pmThank you very much for this post- it’s been very helpful!!! I love your bags! These bag pictures and yourself carrying both helped me decide to order this time an orange 30 as I already have a black in 35 -both birkin. At first I was thinking to get the same size but the boutique manager suggested a 30 to have a variety, and since they do not have birkins on display, I have to resort to the internet to find a topic about this- and there goes your blog which is awesome!!! July 8, 2012 at 10:58 amHey, thanks for the comparison! When you put it next to that chanel the Birkin 30 looks small 🙂 I have been trying to hunt down a size 40 which is reasonably priced (I’m a big lady).. no such luck. July 25, 2012 at 3:53 pmHello! I recently got an Hermes Garden Party in Etoupe. I noticed that your Birkin is also Etoupe. I was wondering if it is difficult to keep clean? I am terrified that the handles will darken. Please advise. Thanks.
Katherine
July 25, 2012 at 3:58 pmHi! That’s a beautiful bag. It is not difficult to keep clean at all – I haven’t used mine in a while but I usually clean off the handles with baby wipes every few weeks or so – keeps it looking good 🙂 I have a lighter color Birkin that I’ve had for six years and it still looks good using this treatment.
karen
July 25, 2012 at 4:20 pmHello Catherine! Thanks for your quick response. Do you recommend a particular brand of baby wipes? Sorry for bothering you with so many questions…
It was actually your post which inspired me to get a Garden Party!

July 25, 2012 at 4:21 pmSorry–I spelled your name with “C” instead of “K”. Terribly sorry!! 🙁
Katherine
July 25, 2012 at 9:22 pmNo problem, it happens 🙂 I don’t really go for any brand but try to get the sensitive skin ones – the ones without scent and that are alcohol free. Don’t over do it with the rubbing either – a light swipe should do, and not too often. Enjoy!

July 26, 2012 at 7:23 amThanks for your help, Katherine! I consider you the Hermes expert!
By the way, is your Birkin 35 Togo or Clemence?

July 26, 2012 at 8:36 amIn regards to colour (and not style), which do you find is easier to match? Gold or Etoupe? For me personally, I wear mostly grays, blues, black, and the occasional red. Thanks for your help!
Katherine
July 26, 2012 at 9:34 amIf you have a cool palette I would say maybe etoupe. Although honestly gold and etoupe are two of the most versatile neutrals that H makes – today I am wearing all grays and could have worn either my gold or etoupe bags (I went with etoupe today!)

August 14, 2012 at 10:47 pmHi Kelly…it doesn’t 🙁 A 35 might be large on you but it all depends on how you pull it off! Have you thought about another bag style to fit your needs?

August 20, 2012 at 9:29 pmI was researching up the birkin, and I’m so glad you had made a post about it. To be realistic, I would love to own a birkin, but my local hermes store says that they won’t sell it to anyone unless they are “regular”, meaning my few purchases of H clics were not enough. If you could recommend, what would be the best way to purchase a birkin? I had looked up malleries/ online resellers but most were inflated by $4000 up, and used.. there are also very few resellers for the 30cm.. would you suggest to go to europe/paris and try your luck? I think your quite knowledgable and I would love your input! thanks =)

August 20, 2012 at 10:24 pmHonestly I might try Europe (not sure where you live)…but if I were you I wouldn’t get super fixated on just that one bag (though I know it’s lovely!). I might just wait my time out, believe me your B will come and in the meanwhile don’t stress…enjoy a nice trip to Europe. Hope that helps Sarah!

December 23, 2012 at 7:18 amHello Katherine,
I have been contemplating the 35 for a long time, and now am keen especially after seeing your gorgeous bags – I am however taking the weighty comments seriously. Would you have an accurate measure of the weight of the 35?
Thank you for your help!

December 23, 2012 at 3:38 pmHi Sue, I don’t right now but if you Google it you might be able to find something (or check Purse Forum). I don’t have a scale but if I do later I’ll be sure to update the post 🙂

Katherine
September 20, 2013 at 11:16 amYes! If I started from scratch I might get one, at this point I don’t think I will be adding it though. One of the most versatile bags you can get in my opinion!

December 3, 2014 at 7:39 amHi Katherine ! Could you tell me color and kind of leather of the Birkin 30? Because it seems lighter than gold, but darker than natural sable.
Thank you 😉

August 9, 2016 at 4:58 pmHi, My personal assistant at Hermes reached out to me to see if I was interested in a Birkin size 30 in Etoupe colour. I already have the 35 Birkin in Tosca.
My question is I’m 5’1 and I thought the 35 was perfect for me, do you think it’s better to have a variety in different sizes? I have not gone into Hermes to see it, because it’s in a different country. Also would you say the Etoupe is more of a grey colour?
Thanks appreciate your advice

August 9, 2016 at 9:28 pmI would definitely get the 30 in Etoupe! A beautiful addition and great for your height.

August 5, 2016 at 2:11 pmKatherine. Can I also ask about the color of your 30? Gorgeous! The etoupe was in reference to the 35, no? Thank you and have a great weekend!

August 6, 2016 at 7:42 amIt’s gold in vache liegee – unfortunately Hermes doesn’t make this leather for Birkins anymore. Hope this helps!
