For today’s wardrobe recap, I wanted to cover A Bigger Splash, starring Tilda Swinton and Fiennes.
A Bigger Splash is the sort of movie which normally would come and go without me ever knowing it even existed (aka highly acclaimed, with a plot requiring more than several brain cells to comprehend). However it popped on my radar because I had also watched I Am Love, by the same director, Luca Guadagnino. I Am Love was such a cool, stylish movie that of course I had to wardrobe recap it. And when I found out that the same director was not only working with the goddess Tilda Swinton again, but also with Raf Simons (who was at Dior at the time), who also designed Tilda’s wardrobe for I Am Love? I knew I had to watch, and recap. Enjoy!
Our first shot of Tilda, heading out for a fabulous Italian vacation with her young attractive boyfriend with glamorous sunglasses. Go Tilda.
A few shots of her excellent shirtdress. This shirtdress operates as both a beach cover up and resort wear for Tilda, and is modified Dior, as is almost everything Tilda wears in the movie (of course this is when Raf Simons was still there). Such a chic, effortless piece. You can find a similar versatile knotted dress from J.W. Anderson, and a much more wallet friendly version from Caslon, here (I like that the Caslon is pure linen, too).
Yes, Ralph Fiennes is in the movie – he does such a great job of “creepy dad”.
A simple look but I wanted to show that the sunglasses are actually Tilda’s! The particular sunglasses she wore are sold out, she also wears black So Reals. You can find a well priced version of her chambray shirt from Billabong.
This is one of my favorite outfits in the whole movie. This jersey pantsuit is everything, isn’t it? She looks so good it almost makes me want to buy one but I know I’d look like Snooki. I tried to find a similar pantsuit but really couldn’t find anything to compare, the closest is this Halston Heritage gown. I also like this smocked Tory Burch dress for a beautiful white vacation dress.
Just look at how it drapes!
Did you know that Tilda is a rock star in this movie? Just threw in an outfit and makeup look for fun.
I really love a gorgeous caftan – it’s one of my favorite beach looks. Here are a few that I found, from Lilly Pulitzer, in a more simple solid embroidered design, and a beautiful butterfly print from ASA KAFTANS.
I love this beautiful look, everything about it from the draped black top and the white skirt, the tan sandals, the straw bag for groceries, the lovely supple leather hobo. Everything! For a similar vibe I really like this slouchy hobo from The Row, and there’s also always the classic Bottega Veneta Cervo hobo.
For the straw tote, the closest approximation I could find (which is actually quite close) is the J.Crew market tote.
A quick shot of a twist front dress – this only makes a brief appearance in the film.
A chic zip front khaki dress from Dior…it’s two way zip! The closest I could find to this was this Alexander Wang safari dress, which is actually really, really nice (but expensive). There’s also a great army green version, from Splendid.
Another shirt dress, this one long and striped. Here’s a similar option (on sale!) from Free People.
I have a better shot of this dress, but included this close up so you could see the cool links on her watch. It’s Dior (I think)?
Tilda’s final outfit in the movie, in a ladylike print dress. I love that she’s a rock star but in her off time she dresses in Dior sheaths and can pull it off. Only Tilda. For a similar design, check out this Altuzarra. I had a hard time finding a less expensive version of this dress…it seems like something I’ve seen in past seasons, but I couldn’t find anything when I looked this time. Anyone have any ideas?
Did any of you catch A Bigger Splash? What did you think of the movie and its fashions?

February 7, 2017 at 5:04 pmHey Katherine,
I had no idea this movie existed! Gosh, I have been under a rock! I loved the previous film and now I have something to look forward to watching – thank you for that! I hope it was good – did you enjoy the film?
Also, thanks to you, I finally found Rockstuds that I think look good. Doubtful I will buy them, but they do look cute – I think they would look amazing on you! I have been on a serious no-buy and trying to stick to it. 😉

February 8, 2017 at 10:43 pmI was browsing anthropologie’s sale item and thought this was similar to the white pantsuit minus the belt and in a different color https://www.anthropologie.com/shop/reunir-jumpsuit?category=sale-pants&color=062 Alas it is out in my size.

February 9, 2017 at 10:55 pmThe pantsuit is quite fabulous indeed. I also liked your Caslon shirt dress recommendation. I was thinking about getting something like that for an upcoming Palm Springs vacation.

February 21, 2017 at 11:15 pmThanks for bringing this movie to my attention. Beautiful shirtdress. I’d love for you to do a piece about the clothing in the French movie Elle. The clothing worn by the main character was lovely.
